Course Overview

Austrian public universities charge non-EU students roughly €726 per semester — about €1,500 a year — which puts a two-year English-taught research Master's in the Alps at under a fifth of the cost of the UK equivalent. Innsbruck's MSc in Molecular and Cellular Biology is a research-heavy 120 ECTS degree run jointly across the Department of Molecular Biology and the Institute of Zoology, with specialisation options in molecular genetics, cell biology, developmental biology, microbiology and biomedical research.

The structure is laboratory-first: a substantial proportion of credits are practical rotations and the final year is effectively a full-time research thesis inside a working group. Innsbruck's molecular biology campus is co-located with the Medical University of Innsbruck, which opens biomedical and translational projects, and the CD Laboratories give some groups direct industry funding. Cohorts are small and supervisors are accessible in a way large UK departments rarely manage.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle Bachelor's degree (180 ECTS equivalent) in molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, microbiology or a closely related life science, with a good grade average.
  • check_circle Documented laboratory coursework — Innsbruck assesses curriculum equivalence module by module and may prescribe supplementary examinations if there are gaps.
  • check_circle Certified degree certificate and transcripts with sworn translations; non-EU applicants must apply through the university's admission office well before the semester deadline.
  • check_circle CV and short motivation statement naming the research area you want to work in.
  • check_circle Non-EU applicants need an Austrian student residence permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung — Studierender), applied for at the Austrian embassy with proof of about €13,000 in accessible funds for the year.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall, or TOEFL iBT 87 Overall.

Career Outcomes & PR

Most graduates continue into funded doctoral positions — in Austria and Germany these are salaried research posts, and an Innsbruck research Master's with a lab-based thesis is a direct feeder. Others move into biotech and pharmaceutical R&D and quality roles across the Austrian and German life-science corridor, diagnostics laboratories, and clinical research organisations. Austria's Red-White-Red Card Plus for graduates gives a 12-month job-search residence permit after completion. Sri Lankan graduates return into research and teaching posts at Colombo, Peradeniya, Kelaniya, Jayewardenepura and SLIIT, into the Medical Research Institute and molecular diagnostics laboratories in Colombo, and into the QA and R&D functions of the local pharmaceutical and agri-biotech sector.
