MSc Nursing Science
University of Basel
Course Overview
The University of Basel's Institute of Nursing Science (INS) was the first academic nursing-science institute in continental Europe, and its English-taught MSc Nursing Science is a flagship advanced-practice and research degree. The programme develops nurses into clinical leaders and scientists: evidence-based practice, advanced clinical assessment, health-services research, gerontology, chronic-care models, and the methods to design and evaluate nursing interventions. Basel is a major life-sciences hub — home to Roche and Novartis — and the INS is closely linked to the University Hospital Basel, giving strong clinical and research integration. Swiss public tuition is very low, so the main cost is living.
Sri Lankan applicants must hold a BSc Nursing (SLQF Level 6) with registration as a nurse; the programme is built for registered nurses moving into advanced practice, education, or research. English-medium Sri Lankan BSc Nursing programmes can waive the language test via an MOI letter. Note that this is an academic and advanced-practice qualification — practising as a nurse in Switzerland additionally requires recognition by the relevant Swiss authority, and returning to Sri Lanka it complements your existing Sri Lanka Nursing Council registration rather than replacing it. Switzerland offers non-EU graduates a six-month post-study residence permit.

Career Outcomes & PR
Switzerland grants non-EU graduates a six-month post-study residence permit to seek qualified work (clinical practice additionally requires Swiss professional recognition). Basel Nursing Science alumni move into advanced-practice nurse (APN) and clinical-nurse-specialist roles at University Hospital Basel and across Swiss health systems, nursing-research positions, and clinical-affairs roles at Roche and Novartis. Sri Lankan returnees lead nursing education at the National Institute of Nursing Education, take advanced-practice and quality roles at Asiri, Nawaloka, Lanka Hospitals, and Durdans, and lecture in BSc Nursing programmes at state universities — careers where a Basel master's is a strong differentiator.
