Course Overview

The Master Nuclear Energy at Université Paris-Saclay is a two-year, 120-ECTS degree taught entirely in English, run jointly by Paris-Saclay with CEA (the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission), CentraleSupélec, Institut Polytechnique de Paris and several ParisTech schools. The first year (M1) is built around a common core plus two tracks — Physics & Engineering and Chemistry & Chemical Engineering — before the second year (M2) splits into specialisations including Nuclear Reactor Physics and Engineering, Nuclear Fuel Cycle, Decommissioning and Waste Management, Nuclear Plant Design, and Operations. The degree carries the I2EN (International Institute of Nuclear Energy) label and is part of the EMINE European Master's in Nuclear Energy network.

France runs roughly 70 per cent of its electricity off nuclear generation and has the deepest civil nuclear industrial base in Europe, so this is one of the few places in the world where you can study reactor physics, fuel-cycle chemistry and plant operations inside the ecosystem that actually builds and runs the plants — EDF, Framatome, Orano, CEA Saclay and CEA Cadarache all sit within reach of the programme. Teaching runs through lectures, computational labs (neutronics and thermal-hydraulics codes), plant visits and a research or industrial internship that usually becomes the master thesis.

For Sri Lankan applicants this is a narrow but genuinely strategic degree. Sri Lanka has an Atomic Energy Board and an Atomic Energy Regulatory Council, is an IAEA member state, and the Ceylon Electricity Board's long-range generation planning has repeatedly examined nuclear as a base-load option alongside the Sampur and Trincomalee proposals. There is essentially no domestic training route into reactor physics or nuclear safety, so the people who fill those roles are trained abroad. Beyond the power sector, the same skill set feeds radiation safety, nuclear medicine physics, industrial radiography and non-destructive testing — all of which exist in Sri Lanka today at the Atomic Energy Board, in the hospitals running radiotherapy services, and across the engineering inspection sector. At roughly €4,200 a year in tuition, the arithmetic is very different from a UK or US nuclear engineering master's.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A Bachelor's degree (3 or 4 years, 180+ ECTS equivalent) in physics, chemistry, mechanical, electrical, chemical or nuclear engineering, or a closely related quantitative discipline, with strong grades.
  • check_circle Solid grounding in mathematics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and modern physics; the Chemistry & Chemical Engineering track expects real inorganic and physical chemistry coursework.
  • check_circle Sri Lankan applicants with a BSc Eng from Moratuwa (Mechanical, Chemical & Process, Electrical) or Peradeniya (Mechanical, Chemical), or a BSc Physics or Chemistry from Colombo, Peradeniya, Kelaniya, Sri Jayewardenepura or Ruhuna, are the standard profile. Second-class upper or better is the realistic bar.
  • check_circle Direct M2 entry is possible if you already hold a Master's-level or four-year engineering degree covering the M1 content.
  • check_circle CV, motivation letter naming the specialisation you want, transcripts and two academic references.
  • check_circle Non-EU applicants in Sri Lanka route the file through Campus France Colombo (Etudes en France procedure) before the visa appointment — start this at least three months ahead of the deadline.
  • check_circle GRE and GMAT are not required.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (no band below 6.0).
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall.
  • check_circle Cambridge English: C1 Advanced.
  • check_circle Duolingo English Test: 115+.
  • check_circle Waived where your Bachelor's degree was taught and examined entirely in English — Sri Lankan applicants from Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Colombo, Kelaniya, Sri Jayewardenepura, Ruhuna, SLIIT and NSBM submit a Medium of Instruction letter from their university registrar.
  • check_circle No French is required for admission or for the taught programme, but free French classes are provided and A2–B1 makes the industrial internship and daily life around Saclay considerably easier.

Career Outcomes & PR

France grants Master's graduates a 12-month APS (autorisation provisoire de séjour) that is extended to 24 months for graduates of French Master's degrees, converting to a Passeport Talent or EU Blue Card on employment. The nuclear sector in France recruits directly out of this programme: EDF (reactor operations, engineering and the EPR2 new-build programme), Framatome, Orano (fuel cycle and waste), CEA, Assystem, Tractebel, Bureau Veritas and Apave on inspection and safety, and the IRSN / ASNR regulatory side. The EMINE network opens the same doors in Belgium, Sweden, Spain and Switzerland, and IAEA Vienna recruits nuclear engineers into safeguards, safety and technical cooperation roles. Starting salaries for nuclear engineering Master's graduates in France run €40,000–€50,000. Sri Lankan returnees fit the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Council, the Ceylon Electricity Board's generation planning and thermal engineering divisions, hospital medical-physics and radiotherapy units, and the industrial radiography and NDT inspection firms serving the ports, refineries and power sector. Doctoral progression into CEA and Paris-Saclay laboratories is a well-trodden route from the M2 internship.
