University of Otago (School of Computing)
Course Overview
Otago's MSc in Computer Science is a research-led programme delivered by one of New Zealand's longest-running computer science departments. The thesis route (18 months, 120 points coursework + 120 points research) suits Sri Lankan applicants targeting a PhD or research career; the coursework-plus-dissertation route (12 months) suits industry-bound applicants who want a faster path to work.
Research strengths include AI and machine learning, computer vision, software engineering, information visualisation and bioinformatics — the department collaborates with the Centre for AI and Public Policy and has industry pipelines into Trade Me, Xero, ESR (NZ Crown research institute) and several Dunedin-based AI startups.
