Course Overview

BOKU University's Master programme in Biotechnology is a four-semester, 120-ECTS degree taught entirely in English that leads to the Austrian engineering title Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.), recognised as equivalent to an MSc. The curriculum integrates biological sciences, chemistry and process technology, and students choose from six specialisations: Bioinformatics, Bioprocess Engineering, Medical Biotechnology, Plant Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, and Protein Engineering and Technology. Laboratory and project work are central, and thesis research often runs with BOKU's industrial-biotech partners, including the Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology (acib).

Sri Lankan graduates in biotechnology, molecular biology, biochemistry or chemical engineering from Colombo, Peradeniya, Sri Jayewardenepura, Kelaniya, Moratuwa, SLIIT or NSBM will find BOKU one of the best-value routes into European bioprocessing and pharmaceutical careers. Austrian public-university tuition is about €727 per semester for non-EU students, and Vienna hosts major biopharma sites including Boehringer Ingelheim, Takeda and Octapharma, with Sandoz in the Tyrol. Austria's 12-month job-seeker residence permit gives graduates time to move into these industries.

Career Outcomes & PR

Austria grants non-EU graduates a 12-month residence permit to look for qualified work, which converts to a Red-White-Red Card or EU Blue Card once employed. BOKU biotechnology graduates work in research institutions, quality management, and the biotech, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, in roles from research scientist to process development and monitoring. Vienna's life-science cluster includes Boehringer Ingelheim, Takeda, Octapharma and a strong biotech start-up scene. Sri Lankan returnees fit R&D, bioprocess and quality roles in pharmaceutical manufacturing, food and dairy processing, and research at the Medical Research Institute or university biotechnology centres.
