Course Overview

The University of Klagenfurt's Master in Information and Communications Engineering (ICE) is taught entirely in English and awards the Austrian engineering title Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.), comparable to an MSc. The Autonomous Systems and Robotics branch focuses on systems that interact with their environment through mechatronic components: robotics, driver-assistance systems, self-driving vehicles, networked sensor technology and intelligent production. The 120-ECTS curriculum combines required fundamentals, 30 ECTS of advanced autonomous-systems electives, engineering supplements, technical complements, soft skills and a 27-ECTS master's thesis, often carried out with Klagenfurt's well-known drone and networked-systems research groups.

This is a strong fit for Sri Lankan electronic and telecommunication, electrical, mechatronic or computer engineering graduates from Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Ruhuna, SLIIT, KDU or NSBM. There is no special entrance procedure, tuition is the Austrian public-university rate of about €727 per semester for non-EU students, and Carinthia's microelectronics corridor (Infineon in Villach, Silicon Austria Labs, the Lakeside Science & Technology Park) offers internships and graduate jobs close to campus. Austria's 12-month job-seeker residence permit gives graduates time to move into EU engineering roles.

Career Outcomes & PR

Austria grants non-EU graduates a 12-month residence permit to look for qualified work, which converts to a Red-White-Red Card or EU Blue Card once employed. Klagenfurt reports graduates of this branch working in automotive development, automation engineering, microelectronics, consultancy and medical technology. Nearby employers include Infineon Technologies (Villach), Silicon Austria Labs, AVL and Magna in Styria, and German automotive suppliers in Bavaria. Sri Lankan returnees fit embedded-systems, automation and robotics roles at Zone24x7 and Dialog, and in the automation teams of MAS, Brandix and manufacturing exporters.
