Course Overview

TU/e runs one of the few dedicated automotive engineering master's in Europe, and it sits in exactly the right place — Eindhoven's Brainport region is the densest high-tech manufacturing cluster in the Netherlands, home to ASML, NXP, Philips, VDL, DAF Trucks and the Automotive Campus at nearby Helmond. The two-year programme covers vehicle dynamics and control, powertrain electrification and battery systems, autonomous driving and perception, embedded control and automotive software architecture, and mobility systems engineering.

The teaching is deliberately systems-level rather than mechanical-only: students work across control theory, electrical engineering and software, which reflects how the industry has actually shifted. TU/e's student teams — including the solar-powered family car and hydrogen racing projects that regularly win international competitions — are open to master's students and are a genuine differentiator on a CV. An industry internship and a graduation project hosted by a company are standard, and for Sri Lankan engineering graduates from Moratuwa or Peradeniya the combination of electrification expertise and Dutch post-study work rights is a strong proposition.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, automotive engineering, mechatronics or applied physics with a strong grade average — TU/e is explicit that it looks for the top segment of the cohort.
  • check_circle Solid grounding in mathematics, dynamics, control systems and programming; the admissions committee assesses your transcript module by module and will decline applicants with gaps in the control and systems core.
  • check_circle Motivation letter connecting your background to a specific track (vehicle dynamics, electrification, autonomous systems) and a CV.
  • check_circle Two academic references and certified transcripts with a grading-scale explanation.
  • check_circle Non-EU applicants should apply well before the 1 April deadline — the entry-visa and residence-permit process runs through the university and takes time.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (no band below 6.0).
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall (writing 22+).
  • check_circle Cambridge English C1 Advanced accepted.
  • check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's was taught and assessed entirely in English at a recognised institution — a Medium of Instruction letter is accepted from Sri Lankan universities.
  • check_circle Dutch is not required; the programme and the regional engineering labour market both operate in English.

Career Outcomes & PR

Graduates are recruited across the Brainport cluster and the wider European automotive and mobility industry — ASML, NXP, VDL, DAF, Bosch, Siemens, TNO and the R&D centres that Ford, Toyota and the German manufacturers run in the Netherlands and Germany — into powertrain electrification, control systems, autonomous driving and battery engineering roles. The Netherlands grants a one-year Orientation Year residence permit after graduation with unrestricted labour-market access, and engineering roles routinely convert to the Highly Skilled Migrant permit. Sri Lankan graduates who return move into automotive assembly and component manufacturing, the EV and charging-infrastructure sector now scaling in Colombo, industrial automation, and engineering faculty roles at Moratuwa and Peradeniya.
