Course Overview
Groningen's MSc Artificial Intelligence is a two-year, 120-ECTS research-oriented master's taught entirely in English at the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Groningen is one of the small number of Dutch universities that treats AI as its own discipline with its own department rather than as a specialisation inside computer science, and the programme reflects that: it is built across five core areas — machine learning, hybrid intelligence, robotics, multi-agent systems, and AI engineering — and it takes the cognitive-science lineage of AI seriously alongside the engineering.
The curriculum covers deep learning, reinforcement learning, computer vision, natural language processing, cognitive modelling, autonomous robotics, multi-agent systems and the design of trustworthy and scalable AI systems, with a substantial component on the safety, explainability and governance side that European AI regulation now makes commercially essential rather than academic. The second year is dominated by an internship and a research thesis, frequently carried out with an industry partner or inside one of the faculty's research groups; the Bernoulli Institute and the university's cognitive engineering group are the usual homes.
For Sri Lankan applicants this is one of the better-value AI master's degrees in Europe. Dutch universities are research-intensive and English-taught throughout, Groningen's living costs are among the lowest of any major Dutch student city, and the Netherlands offers a twelve-month orientation-year permit after graduation with unrestricted work rights — a genuinely usable window rather than a formality. A BSc in Computer Science, Software Engineering, AI, mathematics, physics or a strongly quantitative engineering degree from Moratuwa, Colombo UCSC, Peradeniya, SLIIT, NSBM or IIT is the standard entry profile, and the Sri Lankan technology sector has moved far enough into machine learning — at WSO2, IFS, Sysco LABS, MillenniumIT ESP, Dialog Axiata and the bank analytics teams — that returning graduates find genuine roles rather than having to invent them.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A Bachelor's degree in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Computing Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Cognitive Science or a closely related quantitative discipline.
- check_circle The admissions board checks for calculus, linear algebra, probability and statistics, algorithms and data structures, and programming — usually with a specified minimum number of ECTS in mathematics. This is the requirement that most often blocks otherwise strong applicants, so map your transcript against it early.
- check_circle Programming competence in Python and at least one other language is expected on arrival; the machine-learning modules do not start from zero.
- check_circle Sri Lankan applicants from Moratuwa (CSE, Electronic & Telecommunication), Colombo UCSC (BCS, MIT), Peradeniya (Computer Engineering, Statistics & Operations Research), SLIIT, NSBM, IIT and Kelaniya (Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science) are the standard profile; a second-class upper or a GPA around 3.0+ is the realistic bar.
- check_circle Transcripts, degree certificate, CV, motivation letter and academic references. A final-year project in machine learning, computer vision, NLP or robotics considerably strengthens a file.
- check_circle Non-EU applicants apply by 1 May for the September start. Apply earlier than the deadline — Groningen assesses on a rolling basis and the residence-permit process needs the lead time.
- check_circle Proof of funds covering tuition plus the statutory living-cost amount is required for the residence permit, which the university applies for as a recognised sponsor.

- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall with no component below 6.0.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall with no section below 21.
- check_circle Cambridge English: C1 Advanced.
- check_circle Waived where your Bachelor's degree was taught and examined entirely in English at a recognised institution — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium computing, engineering and science degrees submit a Medium of Instruction letter from the registrar. Confirm with the admissions board in writing before you skip the test.
- check_circle The entire programme — teaching, assessment, thesis and defence — runs in English. Dutch is not required at any point.
- check_circle Free and low-cost Dutch classes are offered through the university language centre. For AI graduates the Dutch technology job market operates largely in English, so Dutch is a quality-of-life advantage rather than a career requirement.

Career Outcomes & PR
The Netherlands grants non-EU graduates of Dutch universities an orientation year — the zoekjaar — a twelve-month residence permit with unrestricted work rights, which can be claimed within three years of graduating and converts to a highly skilled migrant permit on employment, with a reduced salary threshold for recent graduates that makes the conversion realistic rather than theoretical. AI graduates from Groningen go into machine learning engineering, data science, computer vision and NLP roles, robotics and autonomous systems, and the AI research groups in Dutch and European industry: ASML, Philips, Booking.com, Adyen, TomTom, ING and ABN AMRO's data functions, the Dutch technology consultancies, and a dense startup layer around Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Groningen itself. The regulatory and trustworthy-AI content is increasingly commercially relevant as the EU AI Act comes into force. A significant share continue to funded PhD positions — Dutch PhDs are salaried employment contracts, not scholarships, which is a decisive financial fact for a self-funding graduate. Sri Lankan returnees route into the machine learning and data teams at WSO2, IFS R&D, Sysco LABS, MillenniumIT ESP, Virtusa and Dialog Axiata, the analytics functions at HSBC Sri Lanka, Standard Chartered, Commercial Bank and John Keells, the Big Four Colombo AI and data advisory practices, and university computer science departments.
