Course Overview
Carnegie Mellon's Master of Software Engineering (MSE) is a 16-month professional Master's run by the Institute for Software Research within the School of Computer Science — consistently ranked #1 globally for software engineering by CSRankings. The programme combines technical core courses (software architecture, formal methods, distributed systems, AI engineering) with a year-long Studio Project: small student teams partner with industry sponsors (Boeing, Cisco, Lockheed, Bosch, US Navy) to deliver a real production-grade system over 12 months.
Sri Lankan demand for the MSE is intense — CMU's brand alone moves graduate offers from $130k base into the $200k+ total comp band. CS is designated STEM, so MSE graduates qualify for 12 months F-1 OPT + 24 months STEM OPT (36-month total H-1B conversion window). Recent SL alumni have placed at Google, NVIDIA, Stripe, Snowflake, Anthropic, and Meta directly out of the programme.
