Master of Environmental Management (MEM)
Yale School of the Environment
Course Overview
Yale School of the Environment's Master of Environmental Management (MEM) is one of the oldest and most respected environmental degrees in the world — founded 1900 as the Yale Forest School. The two-year programme is housed at YSE on Hillhouse Avenue in New Haven and offers seven specialisations: Climate Change Science & Solutions; Ecosystems & Land Conservation; Energy & the Environment; People, Equity & the Environment; Policy, Economics & Governance; Water Resource Science & Management; and Business & the Environment (a joint pathway with Yale School of Management).
Yale MEM has the highest faculty-to-student ratio of any environmental graduate programme globally (~1:5) and is co-located with the Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy, the Yale Center for Business and the Environment, and the F&ES Endowment Fund. The summer between Year 1 and Year 2 is a substantive professional internship — recent placements include the World Bank, UNEP, Conservation International, McKinsey Sustainability, BlackRock Sustainable Investing, plus US federal agencies (EPA, USFS).
For Sri Lankan applicants, Yale MEM is the most direct US route into senior multilateral and consulting roles in climate and conservation. The programme actively recruits international applicants — about 35% of each cohort is non-US — and runs need-based financial aid that frequently covers 50-100% of tuition for South Asian admits.
