Course Overview

Purdue's MS in Atmospheric Science sits in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences at West Lafayette, Indiana — in the middle of the Midwest convective corridor, which is not a coincidence. The programme is a research degree with a thesis, not a coursework master's: students take the core in atmospheric dynamics, thermodynamics, radiation and synoptic meteorology, then specialise into mesoscale and severe-storm meteorology, radar and remote sensing, atmospheric chemistry and air quality, cloud microphysics, or climate dynamics and land-atmosphere interaction. Purdue's group operates mobile radar and instrumented field platforms and participates in the large NSF and NOAA field campaigns, so students collect data rather than only downloading it.

The financial structure is what makes this realistic for a Sri Lankan applicant, and it is the opposite of how most US master's degrees work. Published non-resident graduate tuition is around USD 30,800 a year, but most students admitted to the MS in Atmospheric Science are supported by a Graduate Research Assistantship or Teaching Assistantship carrying a full tuition remission, a stipend in the region of USD 27,000 to 30,000 a year, and health insurance. That support is attached to admission and to a specific faculty member's funded project, which is why the December deadline matters so much and why identifying and contacting prospective advisors before you apply is not optional politeness — it is the mechanism by which funded places are filled.

For Sri Lanka the subject matter is unusually well aligned. Monsoon variability, extreme rainfall and flash flooding, landslide-triggering rainfall thresholds, drought in the dry zone, and the tropical-cyclone risk in the Bay of Bengal are all live national problems with too few trained specialists behind them. A Purdue MS graduate returning to the Department of Meteorology, the Disaster Management Centre, the International Water Management Institute in Colombo or the Sri Lanka Climate Fund brings modelling and remote-sensing capability the country genuinely lacks. Equally, Atmospheric Science is STEM-designated, so the 36-month OPT runway is available if you want US experience first.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A bachelor's degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, physics, mathematics, engineering, or a related quantitative discipline, with a GPA of 3.0+ (Sri Lankan second class upper or better).
  • check_circle Sri Lankan applicants from the University of Moratuwa (engineering or physical sciences), Colombo, Peradeniya or Ruhuna in physics, mathematics or environmental science are the typical fit — a physics or engineering degree is a stronger foundation here than a general environmental one.
  • check_circle Demonstrated competence in calculus through differential equations, university physics, and programming (Python, MATLAB or Fortran) — the atmospheric dynamics core assumes all three.
  • check_circle A statement of purpose naming specific EAPS faculty whose research you want to join; contact them by email with a substantive question before you apply, because funded places are matched to projects.
  • check_circle Three letters of recommendation, preferably including a research supervisor.
  • check_circle GRE is generally not required, but strong quantitative scores can help an international applicant competing for assistantships — check the department's current policy.
  • check_circle Financial documentation for the I-20 is required even where an assistantship is offered, as the assistantship letter forms part of that documentation.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 80 Overall minimum (min 18 Reading, 14 Listening, 18 Speaking, 18 Writing); the Graduate School expects higher from candidates seeking Teaching Assistantships.
  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (min 6.0 in each band).
  • check_circle PTE Academic: 58 Overall.
  • check_circle Purdue requires an English proficiency test from all international applicants and waives it only for those who have earned a degree from an institution in a country where English is the native language — a Sri Lankan English-medium degree does NOT satisfy this waiver, so plan to sit IELTS or TOEFL.
  • check_circle Applicants seeking a Teaching Assistantship must additionally clear Purdue's oral English proficiency screening after arrival.

Career Outcomes & PR

Graduates go into private-sector weather and climate services (DTN, AccuWeather, The Weather Company, Tomorrow.io), catastrophe modelling and reinsurance analytics (Verisk, Swiss Re, Munich Re, Aon), renewable-energy resource assessment and forecasting (Vestas, Ørsted, NextEra), air-quality consulting, and onward to PhD study. Note honestly that most NOAA and National Weather Service positions are restricted to US citizens, so the federal route is generally closed to Sri Lankan graduates — the private sector and the university research pipeline are the realistic US pathways. Atmospheric Science is STEM-designated, giving 12 months of OPT plus the 24-month STEM extension, 36 months in total. Sri Lankan returnees are strong candidates for the Department of Meteorology, the Disaster Management Centre, the International Water Management Institute in Colombo, the Sri Lanka Climate Fund, the Mahaweli Authority's hydrology units, and academic posts at Colombo, Peradeniya and Ruhuna.
