MS in Bioengineering
Stanford University
Course Overview
Stanford Bioengineering sits jointly inside the School of Medicine and the School of Engineering — a structure that exists nowhere else in the US system. The MS is a 45-unit program built around a core in systems biology, biomechanics, and bioengineering design, plus electives drawn from across both schools (synthetic biology, neuroengineering, computational biology, medical imaging).
Sri Lankan students typically use the MS as a launchpad — either to PhD programs (Stanford, MIT, UCSF) or to bioengineering roles in the Bay Area medical-device and biotech cluster (Genentech, Illumina, Verily, Stryker). The two-year structure gives room for a research project under a faculty PI, which makes a measurable difference to PhD applications.

Career Outcomes & PR
Bioengineering is a STEM-designated degree, so graduates qualify for 12 months F-1 OPT + 24 months STEM OPT — 3 years to secure H-1B sponsorship. Around half of Stanford MS Bioeng graduates progress to PhD programs (Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, UCSF); the rest move into Bay Area biotech and medical-device firms — Genentech, Illumina, Verily, Stryker, and Boston Scientific are recurring recruiters. Industry starting salaries cluster in the $95-130k range.
