Course Overview
Harvard Graduate School of Education's Ed.M. is the world's most prestigious one-year Master's in education. The programme has five concentration pathways: Education Leadership, Organizations and Entrepreneurship (ELOE); Education Policy and Analysis (EPA); Human Development and Education (HDE); Learning Design, Innovation and Technology (LDIT); and Teaching and Teacher Leadership (TTL). Students take courses across Harvard's other graduate schools — including HKS, HBS, and the Law School — and work with faculty like Howard Gardner (Multiple Intelligences), Fernando Reimers (Global Education Innovation), and Karen Brennan (Scratch / MIT collab).
Sri Lankan applicants typically target HGSE Ed.M. after 3-5 years in MoE, NIE, World Bank Education Global Practice, Asia Foundation, or as senior school leaders. The Ed.M. is a frequent Fulbright (US-Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission) and Said Foundation target programme. Returnees move into Country Director roles at INGOs, MoE Secretary-level positions, or international-school principalships across Colombo and the region.
Entry Requirements
Academic

- check_circle Minimum 2-3 years of professional experience in education, policy, or a related field is strongly preferred.
- check_circle Statement of purpose (1,000-1,500 words) plus a 500-word personal essay.
- check_circle Three letters of recommendation — at least one academic, one professional.
- check_circle GRE is OPTIONAL for all HGSE Ed.M. pathways from 2024 onward.
- check_circle CV and transcripts (course-by-course WES evaluation may be requested).
English Proficiency
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 104 Overall (min 26 in each section).
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.5 Overall (min 7.5 in each band).
- check_circle Duolingo: 130 Overall accepted.
- check_circle Waived only if the entire undergraduate degree was taught and assessed in English at a university in a primarily English-speaking country.

Eligible for 1-year OPT (Optional Practical Training) on the F-1 visa. Top hirers include McKinsey (Social Sector), BCG, Bain, World Bank, UNICEF, UNESCO, Khan Academy, Coursera, and major US school districts. HGSE Ed.M. graduates also feed PhD programmes at Harvard, Stanford, Penn GSE, and Columbia Teachers College. Median post-Ed.M. salary in the US is around USD 75,000-90,000.
