MA Education (Curriculum and Teaching)
Teachers College, Columbia University
Course Overview
Teachers College, Columbia University is the oldest and one of the most prestigious graduate schools of education in the United States, affiliated with Ivy League Columbia University in New York City. Its MA in Curriculum and Teaching trains educators in curriculum theory and design, pedagogy, inclusive and equitable teaching, assessment, and the practice of leading instructional change. Students learn from world-leading faculty in education research and gain access to Columbia's wider resources and NYC's vast network of schools and education organisations — an exceptional environment for educators aiming at curriculum-leadership, teacher-education, and education-policy roles.
Sri Lankan applicants with a Bachelor's (and ideally some teaching or education experience) fit well; an English-medium Sri Lankan degree, or A/L and O/L English, can support the language requirement and many strong applicants are TOEFL/IELTS-exempt on that basis. This is an academic master's that builds expertise in curriculum and teaching — licensure to teach in a specific US state is a separate process. US graduates on an F-1 visa qualify for 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT). Sri Lankan returnees are highly sought to lead curriculum at international and national-curriculum schools and in teacher education.

Career Outcomes & PR
F-1 graduates qualify for 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT). Teachers College graduates move into curriculum-design, instructional-leadership, and teacher-educator roles at schools, districts, ed-tech firms, non-profits, and education-policy organisations in the US and globally; the Columbia network is exceptional. Sri Lankan returnees lead curriculum and academics at international schools (Colombo International, Overseas School of Colombo, Gateway, Lyceum), teacher-training colleges, the National Institute of Education, INGO education programmes, and ed-tech ventures — a credential that commands strong respect in Sri Lankan education.
