Course Overview

Carnegie Mellon's School of Design was the first in the US to build its graduate programme around Transition Design — the idea that designers should be working on systemic problems (healthcare access, climate adaptation, food systems, civic services) rather than only artefacts and interfaces. The MDes runs two years across three tracks: Design for Interactions, Design for Service, and Design for Environments, all sharing a core of research methods, systems thinking, participatory design and prototyping.

The CMU advantage is the surrounding university. Design students take courses and collaborate across the Human-Computer Interaction Institute, the School of Computer Science, the Robotics Institute and the Tepper School, and studio projects are frequently run with real institutional partners in Pittsburgh's health, transit and civic sector. Graduates come out fluent in both design research and the technical vocabulary of the engineers and product managers they will work alongside — which is precisely the profile technology employers hire for.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle Bachelor's degree in design, architecture, HCI, communication, engineering, social sciences or a related field — CMU explicitly admits from non-design backgrounds into the MDes.
  • check_circle Portfolio is the primary criterion: 15-20 pages showing process and reasoning, not only finished visuals. Research, systems and service work is weighted as heavily as visual craft.
  • check_circle Statement of purpose connecting your intended track to specific faculty and CMU's Transition Design agenda.
  • check_circle Three references and a CV; professional design, research or product experience strengthens an application substantially.
  • check_circle GRE is not required.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 102 Overall (CMU's preferred test, with minimum sub-scores), or IELTS Academic 7.5 Overall.
  • check_circle Duolingo English Test is also accepted at a high threshold.
  • check_circle CMU applies its English requirement strictly and does not generally waive it for English-medium instruction — Sri Lankan applicants should plan to sit the test.
  • check_circle A recorded video statement forms part of the application for some tracks.

Career Outcomes & PR

CMU design graduates place into product, interaction and service design roles at technology companies — Google, Apple, Microsoft, Adobe, Meta, IBM and the design consultancies IDEO and frog all recruit here — plus healthcare systems, financial services and civic technology organisations. Design is not currently a STEM-designated field at most schools, so plan on 12 months of OPT rather than 36 unless the specific track carries a STEM CIP code; confirm this with the department before you commit, because it changes the return calculation on a USD 165,000 investment. Sri Lankan graduates return into product design leadership at WSO2, IFS, 99X, Sysco LABS and the Colombo startup ecosystem, into service design for banks and telcos, and into design faculty roles at Moratuwa and AOD.
