Course Overview

The Master in Architecture I is Harvard Graduate School of Design's professional architecture degree and the programme the school is best known for. It runs three years for applicants entering with a bachelor's degree in any field — you do not need a prior architecture degree, which is the crucial structural difference from the post-professional MArch II. The first year and a half is the core sequence: design studios taken by the whole cohort together, plus history and theory, structures and building technology, environmental systems, representation and computation. The remaining terms are elective, and this is where the GSD's breadth shows, because you can take courses across the Department of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning and Design, and cross-register at Harvard's other schools and at MIT.

Gund Hall's single stepped studio tray, where every studio in the school works in one continuous open space, is not an architectural gimmick — it is the pedagogy. You spend three years watching landscape architects and urban designers work eight metres away from you, and the resulting habit of thinking across scales is the thing GSD graduates are actually hired for. The faculty and visiting critic roster is among the strongest anywhere in the discipline.

For a Sri Lankan applicant there are two concrete reasons this matters beyond prestige. First, the MArch I is NAAB-accredited, which is the professional prerequisite for architectural licensure in the United States and is recognised in reciprocity discussions elsewhere; a non-accredited design master's is not. Second, Harvard's MArch is STEM-designated, meaning F-1 graduates can access the 24-month OPT extension on top of the standard 12 months — three years of US work authorisation, which in a profession with long licensure timelines genuinely matters. Sri Lanka has a serious architectural tradition of its own, from Geoffrey Bawa's tropical modernism onwards, and a growing practice base working on climate-responsive design, heritage conservation and dense urban housing in Colombo. Those are exactly the problems the GSD's studios are set on. Be clear-eyed about the cost: three years at this fee level is a very large investment, and the GSD's aid is need-based and partial rather than a full ride.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A completed Bachelor's degree in any discipline — the MArch I is designed for applicants without a prior professional architecture degree, though holders of a Sri Lankan B.Arch or BSc (Built Environment) also apply and may receive advanced standing.
  • check_circle A portfolio of creative work is the single most important element of the application. It does not have to be architectural: drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, furniture, graphic design, film and craft work are all read seriously. What the committee is assessing is spatial and visual intelligence and evidence of sustained making.
  • check_circle Sri Lankan applicants from the University of Moratuwa's Faculty of Architecture, from the University of the Visual and Performing Arts, or from engineering, fine arts and humanities backgrounds at Colombo, Peradeniya and Moratuwa are the usual profiles.
  • check_circle Prerequisite coursework in calculus and physics (or an equivalent) is normally expected before enrolment; check the current requirement and take a community-college or online equivalent if your degree did not include it.
  • check_circle Three letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, transcripts and a CV.
  • check_circle GRE requirements have changed at the GSD in recent cycles — verify the current policy for your admission year rather than relying on older guidance.
  • check_circle Practice experience at a Colombo architectural firm strengthens an application and, more importantly, tends to produce a much better portfolio.
  • check_circle Financial documentation is required for the I-20, then the SEVIS fee and the F-1 visa interview at the US Embassy in Colombo; a three-year programme means demonstrating funding at a scale that requires planning well ahead.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 100-104 Overall is the standard expectation for GSD applicants whose prior degree was not taught in English.
  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0-7.5 Overall.
  • check_circle The GSD waives the requirement for applicants who have completed a degree taught entirely in English at an institution in a country where English is the medium of instruction — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium programmes at Moratuwa should ask the admissions office directly whether their degree qualifies, since Harvard applies this narrowly.
  • check_circle Studio culture is verbal: you defend your work at reviews in front of critics and peers several times a term. Spoken fluency is functionally more important here than the written score.
  • check_circle All teaching, reviews and assessment are in English.

Career Outcomes & PR

The MArch is STEM-designated, so F-1 graduates qualify for 12 months of Optional Practical Training plus the 24-month STEM extension, giving three years of US work authorisation before H-1B sponsorship becomes the constraint. NAAB accreditation is the academic prerequisite for US architectural licensure, which additionally requires completing the Architectural Experience Program hours and passing the Architect Registration Examination — a multi-year process that begins during, not after, employment. GSD graduates go into the leading international practices (SOM, KPF, Gensler, Foster + Partners, BIG, OMA, Snøhetta, Diller Scofidio + Renfro), into their own studios, into urban design and public-realm work with city agencies, into development and real estate, into computational design and fabrication roles, and into academia. For a Sri Lankan returnee the credential is significant: Colombo's practice scene, the heritage conservation sector, the hospitality and resort architecture market, and teaching at Moratuwa's Faculty of Architecture all recognise a Harvard MArch immediately. Note that Sri Lankan chartered status runs through the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects' own route, so confirm with the SLIA how a NAAB-accredited degree is assessed before assuming automatic recognition at home.
