Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele
Medicine and Surgery (MD Programme in English)
Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele
Course Overview
Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milan runs one of Italy's most competitive English-taught Medicine and Surgery programmes — a six-year MD degree taught entirely on the San Raffaele Hospital campus, one of the top teaching hospitals in Europe. The programme leads directly to the Italian Medical Doctor qualification (equivalent to MBBS) and is recognised across the EU and increasingly by the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) following standard registration and Act 16 examination.
Admission is by IMAT (International Medical Admissions Test) — sat at British Council Colombo or Kandy in early September — and selection is highly competitive (typically <8% of Sri Lankan applicants succeed). San Raffaele integrates basic science with clinical rotations from year three, and students train alongside Italian medical students in the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital — a major cardiovascular and oncology research centre. Sri Lankan applicants should plan a serious 6–12 month IMAT preparation.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan A/Ls with strong passes (A grades) in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics/Mathematics — minimum Z-score equivalence to Italian Maturità (typically 1.7+ at Bio Science stream).
- check_circle IMAT (International Medical Admissions Test) — Logic, General Knowledge, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics; sat once per year in early September at British Council Colombo.
- check_circle Motivational essay and academic transcripts uploaded via Universitaly.
- check_circle Sri Lankan applicants will be expected to register with the SLMC after returning home — programme is recognised for SLMC Act 16 examination.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.0 Overall (min 5.5 in each section) — IMAT itself is in English, so an English-medium school background is the strongest signal.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 80 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge B2 First (FCE) or higher.
- check_circle Waived if your prior schooling (Cambridge/Edexcel/IB or English-medium government school) was in English.

Career Outcomes & PR
San Raffaele MD graduates qualify to sit Italian specialty entrance exams (Specializzazione) for paid 4-5 year residency contracts inside the Italian National Health Service. Italy's 12-month post-study residence permit covers the gap between graduation and residency. Sri Lankan returnees route through the SLMC Act 16 exam to register as medical practitioners and join private hospitals (Lanka Hospitals, Asiri Group, Hemas Hospitals, Nawaloka) or the Ministry of Health pool. The English-taught Italian MD is recognised across the EU and is a viable foundation for further training in the UK (PLAB) or US (USMLE).
