Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSc)
University of Otago
Course Overview
Otago is New Zealand's premier health sciences university and home to one of two NZ medical schools. The Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSc) is a 3-year undergraduate science degree focused on the human body and disease — covering anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, immunology, microbiology and pathology. The BMedSc is delivered by the Dunedin School of Medicine faculty, in the same labs and lecture theatres as the MBChB programme. Final-year students complete a research project alongside Department of Anatomy or Pathology academics.
Sri Lankan applicants — particularly those who narrowly miss MBBS cut-offs at Sri Lankan medical faculties or who plan to apply to graduate-entry medicine — choose Otago BMedSc as a strategic alternative. The degree leads to: (1) Otago / Auckland MBChB graduate-entry application; (2) Australian / UK / US medical school graduate-entry applications; (3) careers in medical research / pharma / clinical trials; (4) Public Health Master's progression. Strong PR pathway via NZ Skilled Migrant Category with biomedical / clinical research roles.
