Course Overview

UQ's Business School runs one of the few Australian tourism master's that is genuinely a management degree rather than a hospitality-operations one. The programme is built around three linked fields — tourism destination management, hotel and accommodation management, and event and convention management — with a core of strategy, finance, marketing, service operations and research methods underneath. Students can weight the degree toward one field or keep it broad, and the 24-unit version admits applicants without a cognate background.

UQ's tourism research group is consistently ranked among the strongest in the world in the field, and the teaching reflects it: sustainable tourism, destination competitiveness, visitor economics and crisis management are treated as evidence-based subjects with published research behind them. Queensland itself is a working case study — the Great Barrier Reef, the Gold Coast and Brisbane's 2032 Olympic build-out give live material on reef tourism under climate pressure, mass-market resort economies and mega-event planning, all of which map onto Sri Lankan questions about carrying capacity, coastal development and event-led tourism.

Career Outcomes & PR

Graduates move into destination marketing organisations and tourist boards, hotel group commercial and development teams, event and convention bureaus, airline and cruise commercial roles, and tourism consulting and policy. Australia's Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) gives two to three years of post-study work rights for a master's, and Brisbane's Olympic build-out to 2032 is generating sustained demand in event and visitor-economy roles. Sri Lankan graduates return into SLTDA and Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, commercial and development roles at Cinnamon, Jetwing, Aitken Spence and Resplendent Ceylon, MICE and event operators in Colombo, and destination-development programmes run by the ADB, USAID and GIZ.
