Master of Teaching (Secondary)
Faculty of Education and Social Work, University of Auckland
Course Overview
Auckland's Master of Teaching (Secondary) is delivered through the Faculty of Education and Social Work — New Zealand's largest teacher-education provider and consistently ranked top-100 globally for Education (QS by Subject). The 14-month accelerated Master's combines university coursework with two extended practicum placements in Auckland secondary schools (totalling 16 weeks of supervised teaching). Students specialise in one or two teaching subjects from the New Zealand Curriculum (English, Mathematics, Science specialisms, Te Reo Māori, Social Sciences, Health & PE, Visual Arts, Music, Design and Technology). On completion, graduates apply directly to the New Zealand Teaching Council for full registration — the qualifying credential to teach in any state-funded secondary school in New Zealand.
Sri Lankan applicants typically reach the Auckland Master of Teaching after a strong Bachelor's in any subject area (the programme welcomes career-change applicants — engineers, scientists, finance professionals, and arts graduates), often with prior teaching exposure (tuition classes, A/L lecturers, school-based volunteer work). The pathway is uniquely valuable because secondary school teaching is on New Zealand's Green List (Tier 1) — straight-to-residence visa eligibility from the moment a graduate signs an offer with a NZ secondary school. The 3-year Post-Study Work Visa typically isn't even used because graduates move directly to the Skilled Migrant Category. Sri Lankan returnees route into senior teaching positions at Sri Lanka's leading international schools (Royal College, Trinity College, S. Thomas' College, Methodist College, Visakha Vidyalaya, Lyceum International, Stafford International), into education-policy roles at the National Institute of Education, and into education-NGO leadership (Sarvodaya, Room to Read Sri Lanka).
