Master of Architecture
Bond University
Deadline detail: Rolling — 8 weeks before intake start
Course Overview
Bond's Master of Architecture is the professional half of the architecture qualification — the degree that, together with an accredited bachelor's, completes the academic requirement for registration as an architect in Australia. It runs four semesters on Bond's accelerated three-intakes-a-year calendar, so a student entering with an accredited bachelor's finishes in about sixteen months rather than two years. The programme is fully accredited for professional recognition, meeting the requirements of the Board of Architects Queensland and the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia.
It is taught in the Abedian School of Architecture, a building that is itself a piece of architecture worth studying — a Crab Studio design by Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham, run as an open studio where every student has a permanent, personal workspace rather than a shared desk. That matters more than it sounds: architecture is a studio discipline, and the ratio of staff to students at Bond is low enough that critique is continuous rather than occasional. The curriculum comprises thirteen architecture and built-environment subjects plus electives, four per semester, driven by design studios and supported by technology, practice, history-theory and professional-practice coursework. A monthly guest lecture series brings international practitioners through, and eligible students join a funded international study tour.
For Sri Lankan applicants this is a serious option if you already hold a first architecture degree — the B.Sc. (Built Environment) or B.Arch. from Moratuwa, or an accredited architecture bachelor's from elsewhere — and want the professional master's plus international exposure. Sri Lankan practice sits at an interesting point: rapid vertical development in Colombo, a strong regional-modernist tradition running from Geoffrey Bawa through to the present, and a hospitality sector that commissions genuinely ambitious work. A Bond M.Arch. adds Australian registration eligibility, a portfolio built under international critique, and access to a market — the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sydney — with active demand for graduate architects.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A recognised bachelor's degree in architecture or architectural studies — for direct entry to the Master's, Bond expects a three-year accredited architecture bachelor's or equivalent.
- check_circle Applicants without an architecture bachelor's can enter through Bond's bachelor-to-master's or graduate-diploma pathways, which extend the total duration to two years or three years and four months respectively.
- check_circle A design portfolio is central to the application. Bond assesses design capability from the portfolio, so this is the part of the file to invest real effort in — measured drawings, studio projects, models, sketch work and any built or competition work.
- check_circle Sri Lankan applicants from the University of Moratuwa's Faculty of Architecture (B.Sc. Built Environment / B.Arch.) are the standard direct-entry profile; graduates of City School of Architecture Colombo and other SLIA-recognised routes should have the transcript and portfolio assessed for advanced standing before applying.
- check_circle A personal statement and CV; practice experience in an architectural office is weighted positively.
- check_circle Applications are assessed on a rolling basis against the January and September intakes.
- check_circle An Australian student visa requires evidence of funds covering tuition, living costs and travel, plus Overseas Student Health Cover for the full visa period.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall with no band below 6.0.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 92 Overall.
- check_circle PTE Academic: 65 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge English: C1 Advanced at 185 or above.
- check_circle Waived where you have completed a full degree taught and assessed entirely in English at a recognised institution — Sri Lankan applicants from Moratuwa and other English-medium architecture programmes satisfy this with a Medium of Instruction letter.
- check_circle The Department of Home Affairs assesses English for the student visa separately from Bond's academic requirement.

Career Outcomes & PR
Graduates are eligible for the 485 Temporary Graduate Visa, giving two or more years of full work rights in Australia. Registration as an architect in Australia is a two-stage process after the accredited degrees: a logged period of practical experience, then the Architectural Practice Examination administered through the state architect registration board — Bond's accreditation with the Board of Architects Queensland and the AACA is what makes you eligible to enter that process. Architect is a skilled occupation on Australia's skilled occupation lists, though the specific list and PR pathway change from year to year, so confirm the current settings with a registered migration agent rather than assuming. Graduates work in practices across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, in the design arms of developers and construction firms, and in interior, urban design and heritage specialisations. Sri Lankan returnees should note that registration to practise as an architect in Sri Lanka runs through the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects and the Architects Registration Board, which assess overseas qualifications on their own terms — begin that conversation with SLIA before you leave rather than after you return. The degree itself is strongly regarded by Colombo practices, by the hospitality and resort developers, and by the international firms working on Sri Lankan and Maldivian projects.
