Master of Nursing
University of Alberta
Course Overview
The University of Alberta's Master of Nursing is delivered by the Faculty of Nursing — ranked among the world's top 10 for nursing in the QS subject tables, at a U15 research university. The graduate program builds advanced practice, leadership, and research capability, with course-based and thesis-based routes and specialisations sping nursing education, leadership, and clinical practice. Designed for registered nurses, it deepens evidence-based practice and prepares graduates for advanced clinical, leadership, education, and research roles. International graduate tuition at U of A is among the most affordable of any globally ranked nursing faculty.
Sri Lankan applicants — qualified registered nurses and nursing graduates from the nursing schools and degree programmes at Colombo, Peradeniya, KDU, and Open University — choose U of A to advance into nurse-leadership, education, and advanced-practice roles. An English-medium nursing degree may support an IELTS waiver via an MOI letter for university admission, though clinical registration in Alberta has its own English benchmark. Graduates qualify for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP, up to 3 years), a recognised pathway toward permanent residence amid a strong Canadian nursing shortage. Returnees command senior clinical, education, and management roles at Lanka Hospitals, Nawaloka, Asiri Group, Durdans, and Hemas Hospitals, plus nurse-educator posts.
