Course Overview
Sydney's Master of Museum and Heritage Studies is taught out of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences with the Chau Chak Wing Museum on campus — the university's own collection of antiquities, natural history and art, opened in 2020 — as a working teaching resource. The programme covers curatorial practice and exhibition development, collection management and conservation principles, heritage interpretation and policy, museum education and audience research, and the digital turn in collections and access.
Its distinctive strand is repatriation and Indigenous cultural authority. Australian museums have spent two decades reworking how they hold and interpret Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander material, including the return of ancestral remains and secret-sacred objects, and the programme teaches that history as method rather than as a case study. For Sri Lankan students the parallels are immediate — colonial-era removals to European collections, custodianship of Buddhist and Hindu material heritage, and the question of who holds interpretive authority over sites like Sigiriya and Anuradhapura. A professional placement in a museum, gallery or heritage organisation is part of the degree.

Career Outcomes & PR
The placement is what converts the degree into employment — graduates take curatorial, collections, registrar, education and public-programmes roles at state and regional museums and galleries, heritage agencies, auction houses and private collections, plus heritage consultancy attached to planning and development approvals. Australia's Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) gives two to three years of post-study work rights for a master's. Be realistic that the sector is competitive and entry salaries are modest. Sri Lankan graduates return into the Department of National Museums, the Department of Archaeology, the Central Cultural Fund, private galleries and foundations in Colombo, and into UNESCO and heritage-tourism consulting, where formal museology training remains scarce.
