Master in History
Sciences Po
Deadline detail: Sciences Po runs staged international admission rounds from late autumn through the spring — apply in the first round you are ready for, because places in the research-school masters are limited
Course Overview
The Master in History is taught by the Sciences Po School of Research through the Centre d'histoire de Sciences Po, and it is a research degree in the proper sense — the point is to train you to do history, not to survey it. The two years combine high-level theoretical and methodological training in how historical inquiry is actually constructed, specialisation in one of a wide range of fields and periods, seminar work in small groups, and a substantial dissertation built on primary archival research. Sciences Po's own historical strengths are in political, international, economic, social and contemporary history, with particular depth in twentieth-century Europe, decolonisation, war and memory, and the history of political ideas.
The degree is explicitly a pathway rather than a terminal qualification. It feeds the Sciences Po PhD in History and, in the French system, the agrégation preparation classes — but it also routes graduates into the public service, heritage, libraries and archives, publishing, the press, the cultural and audiovisual industries, and non-profits. The Centre d'histoire's research seminars, visiting scholars and Paris location put you inside one of the densest concentrations of archives in the world: the Archives nationales, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the diplomatic archives at La Courneuve, and the specialist collections of the grandes écoles.
You must be clear-eyed about one thing before applying: the Master in History is taught in French. This is not a programme where French is a nice-to-have for daily life — the seminars, the reading, the assessment and the dissertation are all in French, and the entry bar is genuine fluency, normally evidenced at C1. That makes it a realistic target for a specific kind of Sri Lankan applicant: someone who has taken French seriously through the Alliance Française de Kotte or Colombo to DELF C1 level, or who has already studied French at Kelaniya or Colombo. For that applicant it is one of the strongest history degrees in Europe, on French public-university-adjacent means-tested fees, with the Émile Boutmy scholarship available on top. If your French is not there yet, the honest advice is to spend a year getting it there rather than applying and being screened out.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A completed Bachelor's degree — history, political science, international relations, sociology, area studies, languages or a related humanities or social science discipline is the usual background.
- check_circle Sri Lankan applicants from the history, political science, sociology or modern-languages departments at Peradeniya, Colombo, Kelaniya or Sri Jayewardenepura are the typical academic profile.
- check_circle A strong academic record — a Second Upper or First Class degree is the realistic competitive standard for a research-school master's.
- check_circle A research statement identifying the period, region and question you intend to work on. This is the single most heavily weighted document; a generic statement of enthusiasm for history will not get through.
- check_circle CV and two academic references, ideally from supervisors who can speak to your capacity for independent research.
- check_circle Evidence of prior research work — a dissertation, a published article, archival or oral-history fieldwork — materially strengthens the file.
- check_circle Sri Lankan applicants apply through the Campus France 'Études en France' procedure, which includes an interview at Campus France Colombo before the file is forwarded; start this early because it sits ahead of the visa application, not after it.
- check_circle Certified French translations of transcripts and degree certificates are normally required.
English Proficiency
- check_circle This programme is taught in French, so an English test is not the language requirement — French proficiency is.
- check_circle DELF/DALF C1 or a TCF/TEF score at C1 is the normal evidence; some files are accepted at a strong B2 with proof of recent academic work in French.
- check_circle The Alliance Française de Kotte and Colombo run the DELF and DALF examinations in Sri Lanka, and a full progression from A1 to C1 typically takes two to three years of consistent study.
- check_circle English remains useful for the bibliography — a large share of the international historiography is in English — but it will not substitute for French in seminars or in the dissertation.
- check_circle Do not treat this as an 'IELTS-free' shortcut. Sitting IELTS is far easier than reaching C1 French; the language bar here is higher, not lower.

Career Outcomes & PR
France grants master's graduates the APS (autorisation provisoire de séjour) — a 12-month temporary residence permit to look for work or start a business, convertible to a work permit on a qualifying offer. Sciences Po history graduates go into doctoral study at Sciences Po and elsewhere in Europe, into the French and international public service, into heritage institutions, national libraries and archives, into publishing houses and the serious press, into documentary and audiovisual production, and into research and policy roles at think tanks and non-profits where historical judgement is the actual skill being bought. For a Sri Lankan returnee the credential opens academic posts in the history and political science departments at Peradeniya, Colombo, Kelaniya and Jaffna, curatorial and research roles at the Department of National Archives and the National Museum, work in the heritage and conservation sector, and research positions at Colombo policy institutes. It is worth saying plainly that this is a scholarly and cultural-sector credential, not a high-salary corporate one — pursue it because the work matters to you.
