Course Overview
Monash's Master of Data Science is a 2-year program (96 credit points) delivered by the Faculty of Information Technology at Clayton — the largest dedicated IT faculty in Australia. The program is designed for graduates from any discipline: engineering, mathematics, economics, biology, even humanities with a strong quantitative streak. Students from an IT/computing background can apply for Entry Level 2 and finish in 1.5 years.
The curriculum covers programming foundations, statistics, machine learning, big data systems, data visualisation and ethics, culminating in a 24-credit research or industry project. Recent industry partners on capstone projects include the CSIRO, Telstra, Bupa and CommBank.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised Sri Lankan university with at least a credit average (60%, GPA 2.7+).
- check_circle Mathematics at first-year university level (calculus, linear algebra or statistics) — applicants without this complete a bridging unit.
- check_circle Entry Level 2 (1.5 years) requires a Bachelor's in IT, computer science or software engineering.
- check_circle Personal statement explaining motivation; no GRE required.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (no band below 6.0).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 79 Overall.
- check_circle PTE Academic: 58 Overall.
- check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's degree was taught entirely in English.

Career Outcomes & PR
Data Science graduates from Monash are eligible for the 485 Temporary Graduate Visa for 3–5 years of post-study work — and since 2023, data science roles sit on Australia's Core Skills Occupation List, opening a clear PR pathway. Major hirers include CommBank, NAB, Telstra, the CSIRO, Atlassian, Canva and Deloitte. Median graduate salary for data scientists in Melbourne is around AUD 95,000.
