Full-time Master of Business Analytics
Melbourne Business School
Deadline detail: Applications are assessed in rounds through the preceding year; international applicants should target an early round to allow time for the student visa and for the January start
Course Overview
The Master of Business Analytics is Melbourne Business School's advanced one-year, full-time degree in quantitative methods and the role of data in decision-making — a programme delivered through MBS and awarded by the University of Melbourne, which is the arrangement behind most of the school's graduate degrees. It is intense by design: a single accelerated year covering statistical modelling and inference, machine learning, optimisation and prescriptive analytics, data management and programming, and applied analytics across marketing, finance, operations and supply chain, finishing with an industry project done with a real client organisation.
What distinguishes it from a computer science data degree is where it sits in the decision. The programme is built for people who will sit between the data and the executive making the call — who can build the model and also explain why the business should act on it. MBS's employer relationships across Australian banking, retail, telecommunications, mining and consulting are the practical asset here, and the industry project is the main mechanism through which they convert into offers.
For a Sri Lankan applicant the appeal is a combination of speed, brand and settlement pathway. One year rather than two halves both the fee and the forgone earnings, Melbourne Business School is Australia's best-known business school, and Australia's Temporary Graduate visa gives coursework master's graduates a post-study work window, with data and analytics occupations well represented on the skilled occupation lists that feed permanent residence. Melbourne also has a large, long-established Sri Lankan community, which makes the practical business of arriving considerably easier. Two honest cautions: the programme is quantitatively demanding and expects a relevant major plus a solid academic average, and Australia's post-study work and migration settings have changed repeatedly in recent years — including age limits and visa duration — so verify the rules that will apply in your graduating year rather than the ones that applied to someone who went in an earlier intake.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A university degree with a relevant major — the stated benchmark is a weighted average mark of 65 percent or higher, alongside English proficiency.
- check_circle Relevant majors include mathematics, statistics, engineering, computer science, economics, finance, actuarial studies and quantitative business disciplines; the mathematics and statistics content of your degree is examined closely.
- check_circle Comfort with programming — typically Python or R — is expected. Applicants who have never coded should build that capability before applying, not during the first term of an accelerated year.
- check_circle Sri Lankan applicants from Moratuwa (engineering, computer science), Colombo (statistics, mathematics, finance), Peradeniya, Sri Jayewardenepura, IIT, SLIIT and NSBM, and CIMA, CFA or actuarial-track professionals, are the standard profiles.
- check_circle GMAT or GRE may be requested depending on your academic background — check what applies to your degree rather than assuming a waiver.
- check_circle CV, transcripts, a statement of motivation and references; interviews form part of the process for some applicants.
- check_circle Work experience is not required for the full-time programme, though relevant internships or a few years in an analytical role strengthen both the application and your placement outcome.
- check_circle An Australian Student visa (subclass 500) requires a Confirmation of Enrolment, Overseas Student Health Cover for the full duration, and evidence of funds for tuition and living costs; the Genuine Student requirement replaced the old Genuine Temporary Entrant test, and Sri Lankan applications are assessed carefully, so the financial and academic narrative in your visa application matters as much as the university offer.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall with no band below 6.0-6.5 is the usual standard for University of Melbourne graduate coursework programmes.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 94 Overall with specified sub-scores.
- check_circle PTE Academic: 65 Overall, and Cambridge C1 Advanced at the equivalent level, are also accepted.
- check_circle The requirement is normally waived where you have completed a full degree taught and examined in English at a recognised institution — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium degrees can often qualify with a Medium of Instruction letter, but the University of Melbourne applies its list of accepted countries and institutions narrowly, so confirm before skipping the test.
- check_circle Note the separate visa dimension: even where the university waives the English test, the Department of Home Affairs has its own English evidence rules for the Student visa, and these are not the same thing.
- check_circle The industry project involves client-facing presentation, so genuine spoken fluency matters more than clearing the numerical threshold.

Career Outcomes & PR
Graduates of an Australian coursework master's are generally eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) Post-Higher Education Work stream, giving a period of full work rights after graduation — currently two years for a master's by coursework, subject to an age limit and to settings that have been revised several times in recent years, so confirm the current rules before you rely on them. Analytics and data science occupations appear on Australia's skilled occupation lists, which is the route from post-study work towards permanent residence. Melbourne Business School analytics graduates go into data science, business intelligence, customer and marketing analytics, risk modelling, pricing, and analytics consulting — at the big four Australian banks (CBA, NAB, ANZ, Westpac), at Telstra and Optus, at the major retailers (Woolworths, Coles, Wesfarmers), at the mining and resources majors (BHP, Rio Tinto), at the consultancies (Accenture, Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC, McKinsey's analytics practice), and at technology firms and start-ups in Melbourne and Sydney. The industry project is the main recruiting channel and should be treated as an extended interview. Sri Lankan returnees enter senior analytics roles at Dialog Axiata, John Keells, Commercial Bank, HNB, Sampath Bank, MAS Holdings, Brandix, WSO2 and IFS, and at the Colombo delivery centres of the global consultancies.
