Course Overview

NYU Steinhardt's MA in Media, Culture, and Communication is an interdisciplinary Master's degree taught in Greenwich Village, NYC — at the intersection of media studies, critical theory, technology, and global communication. The 36-credit programme can be completed in three semesters (1.5 years) full-time or stretched to four semesters with internships. Students choose between two tracks: "Critical Media, Culture, and Communication" (theory-led) or "Visual Culture, Media, and Communication" (production + research hybrid). Faculty include Helga Tawil-Souri, Allen Feldman, and Aurora Wallace.

Sri Lankan applicants choose NYU because Manhattan is the global media and advertising capital — the school's location puts students within walking distance of Condé Nast, Vox Media, Buzzfeed, the New York Times, NBC Universal, and the agency networks at WPP, Omnicom and Publicis. Graduates qualify for 12 months of OPT (Optional Practical Training) post-completion, and the programme is not a STEM-designated degree so does not extend OPT. The MA is also an explicit feeder into NYU Steinhardt's PhD in Media, Culture, and Communication.
