Course Overview
Sungkyunkwan traces its founding to 1398, which makes it East Asia's oldest university, and it is now backed by Samsung — a combination that shows up in the Department of Media and Communication as unusually strong infrastructure and a heavy tilt toward technology-and-media questions. The English-track MA covers digital media and platform studies, media effects and audience research, computational communication and data analytics, interactive and immersive media, and strategic and organisational communication.
The computational side is the differentiator. SKKU's programme treats large-scale text analysis, network analysis and experimental design as standard tools, and students work with the university's media and HCI labs on projects involving social platforms, recommendation systems and immersive content. That skill set is portable in a way traditional media theory is not, and for Sri Lankan graduates it lands squarely on what agencies, platforms and research organisations in Colombo are now trying to hire for and mostly cannot find.
Entry Requirements
Academic

- check_circle Academic CV; evidence of quantitative, statistical or programming ability strengthens an application for the computational track.

- check_circle Apostilled or consular-verified degree certificate and transcripts, plus proof of financial capacity for the student visa (D-2).
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall, or TOEFL iBT 83 Overall.
- check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's was taught and assessed entirely in English — a Medium of Instruction letter from a Sri Lankan university is accepted.
- check_circle The English track requires no Korean; TOPIK is not a condition of admission, and free Korean language courses are provided.

Career Outcomes & PR
Graduates go into data and insight roles at platform and technology companies, strategic communication and brand teams at Korean corporates including the Samsung affiliates, media and advertising agencies, UX and content research, and public-sector communication bodies; a share continue into doctoral study in Korea or abroad. The D-10 job-seeking visa allows up to two years to convert the degree into employment, and the F-2-7 points route rewards a Korean Master's toward long-term residence. Sri Lankan graduates return into analytics and strategy roles at Colombo agencies, digital and audience teams at Dialog, Derana, Capital Maharaja and the banks, research posts at LIRNEasia, and lecturing in mass communication and digital media.
