MA Gender Studies
Utrecht University
Course Overview
Utrecht University is ranked #105 globally in QS World Rankings (2026 edition) and is the Netherlands' second-oldest university (founded 1636). The MA Gender Studies — also known as GEMMA (Erasmus Mundus Master's in Women's and Gender Studies in select years) — is one of Europe's most prestigious feminist / queer theory and gender-studies programmes. The 1-year MA covers intersectional feminist theory, postcolonial and decolonial feminism, queer theory, gender and development, gender and the environment, and digital cultures. Utrecht is the coordinator of the ATGENDER European Association for Gender Research, Education and Documentation.
Sri Lankan applicants — particularly those working at gender-focused NGOs (Women in Need, Centre for Equality and Justice, FOKUS Sri Lanka), researchers at the International Centre for Ethnic Studies (ICES), and activists from Sri Lanka's emerging queer-rights movements — choose Utrecht because (1) tuition is roughly 1/3 of UK / US equivalents, (2) all teaching is in English, (3) the Netherlands' open post-study work environment (Orientation Year for graduates) allows EU labour-market access, and (4) the strong Said Foundation / Erasmus+ funding pipeline. Returnees take Senior Researcher posts at ICES, CEJ, FOKUS, plus UNFPA / UN Women policy roles.
