MA Film Studies
King's College London
Course Overview
King's College London's MA Film Studies is delivered through the Department of Film Studies — one of the UK's most prestigious film theory and history departments — based at the Strand campus right between Somerset House and the British Film Institute (BFI) Southbank. KCL is a Russell Group university, ranked top 40 globally (QS 2025) and consistently in the UK top 5 for Communication and Media Studies (REF 2021). The one-year taught Master's combines core modules in film theory, world cinema, and archival research with optional pathways in Hollywood and global film industries, documentary, queer cinema, and screen aesthetics — plus a 15,000-word dissertation supervised by leading film scholars.
Sri Lankan applicants from English Literature, Communications, Aesthetic Studies (Kelaniya, J'pura), or Visual & Performing Arts backgrounds choose KCL because London is the centre of European film criticism and curation — students get walk-in access to BFI Reuben Library, BFI Southbank screenings, the British Library, and the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum partner archive. The MA is heavy on close textual analysis and theory, which suits applicants targeting PhD progression, curatorial work, or film journalism back home (think Roar Media, Groundviews, The Sunday Times culture pages, Ceylon Today).
