Course Overview

The University of Graz has taught English studies since the nineteenth century, and its Department of English Studies runs the MA in English Studies/American Studies over four semesters and 120 ECTS with English as the language of instruction. Graz's own English-taught study listing confirms that programmes on that list require no German language skills, so this is a genuinely English-medium degree rather than a bilingual one. Graz is Austria's second-largest university and a UNESCO City of Design; the humanities faculty sits in the old town.

The MA is built around strands that students weight to their own interests: literary and cultural studies covering British, American, Irish and postcolonial writing; linguistics, including sociolinguistics, corpus methods, world Englishes and discourse analysis; and cultural and media studies. Seminars are small and discussion-led rather than lecture-driven, students present and publish, and the degree closes with a substantial Master's thesis. Graz also builds in optional 'Master's Plus' modules in communications, media, entrepreneurship, peacebuilding and health humanities. There is real scope for a Sri Lankan student to work on South Asian writing in English, on Sri Lankan English as a variety, or on postcolonial theory with supervision that takes it seriously.

Austria charges non-EU students €726.72 per semester in tuition plus the compulsory students' union contribution of €26.20 — about €1,506 a year, or roughly LKR 520,000. That is a fraction of what an equivalent MA in English costs in the UK, where £20,000-£28,000 a year is standard, and it buys a two-year research degree rather than a nine-month taught one. The real budget line is living in Graz, which is one of the cheaper Austrian cities, and the funds the student residence permit requires you to evidence.

One thing to get right is the deadline. Third-country applicants to a Graz master's without a separate admission procedure apply in a window that runs from 11 May to 8 June for the following winter term — considerably earlier than the general Austrian application window, and earlier than the dates most agents quote. Miss it and you wait a year. Note also that Graz separately participates in a European Joint Master's Programme in English and American Studies with its own portal and its own deadlines; that is a different admissions track from this Graz-only MA.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A subject-relevant Bachelor's degree of at least 180 ECTS (SLQF Level 6, UGC-recognised or equivalent) in English, English Language Teaching, Linguistics, Literature, Translation Studies or a closely related humanities discipline.
  • check_circle Applicants holding a Bachelor's from outside Graz apply through Academic Affairs for an admission assessment, which determines equivalence and any supplementary examinations.
  • check_circle A Class II Upper or better from a Sri Lankan state university is the realistic competitive bar.
  • check_circle Third-country applicants must apply within the 11 May to 8 June window for the winter term — this is earlier than Austria's general application period, so plan document legalisation around it.
  • check_circle Certified, legalised and translated transcripts and degree certificates are required; Sri Lankan documents need apostille or consular legalisation, which should be started months ahead.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle Graz does not publish a numeric English requirement for this programme — neither the programme page nor the department page gives an IELTS, TOEFL or CEFR threshold. What is stated is that a language certificate evidencing your English is required.
  • check_circle Because this is an English studies degree, we advise Sri Lankan applicants to hold IELTS Academic 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 95 or above and to confirm acceptability in writing with Academic Affairs before booking anything else.
  • check_circle Cambridge English C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency are the certificates most likely to be recognised for a programme of this kind.
  • check_circle No blanket medium-of-instruction waiver is published, so a Sri Lankan English-medium degree should not be assumed to remove the certificate requirement — ask, in writing, before deciding.
  • check_circle German is not required for the degree itself. Austria's residence-permit and daily-life administration is conducted in German, and the university's free and subsidised German courses are worth taking.

Career Outcomes & PR

Austria grants non-EU graduates a 12-month residence permit to look for work after completing a degree, which converts to a Red-White-Red Card once a qualifying offer is held. Graz describes this degree as leading to roles that involve language, text, communication or culture — academia, communication and culture management, policy, information management, education, media, journalism, advertising, politics and business. Vienna is one of the four UN headquarters cities and carries a substantial international communications and translation market. Sri Lankan returnees route into university lecturing posts in English and Linguistics, curriculum and materials development at the National Institute of Education, senior teaching and coordination roles in the international-school sector (Colombo International, Elizabeth Moir, Gateway, Lyceum), the British Council, publishing, and corporate communications. The two-year research structure also positions graduates for PhD entry in the UK, Europe or Australia.
