Course Overview

Monash University is a Group of Eight research university and its Faculty of Law ranks among the world's top 50 for law (QS by Subject). The LLM offers a flexible, coursework-based Master's with specialisations across commercial law, international and human-rights law, intellectual property, and dispute resolution. For Sri Lankan Attorneys-at-Law and LLB graduates from Colombo Law Faculty, APIIT, KDU or NSBM, Monash is a respected route into Australian and international legal careers, with strong post-study work pathways.

The one-year programme lets students assemble units across Monash's broad law catalogue and complete a research component. An Australian LLM does not by itself admit you to practise — internationally qualified lawyers seeking Australian admission must satisfy the relevant state Legal Practitioners Admissions Board's academic and practical-training requirements; the LLM can support that path and open in-house, policy and international roles. Australia's Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) provides 2-3 years of post-study work rights.

Career Outcomes & PR

Monash LLM graduates are eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), giving 2-3 years of post-study work rights, with skilled-migration pathways beyond. Graduates move into in-house counsel, policy and legal-research roles, international organisations and (after satisfying state admission requirements) private practice. Melbourne's commercial and corporate-law market is a major recruiter. Sri Lankan returnees route into corporate-commercial and international practice at Colombo firms and as in-house counsel for banks and conglomerates.
