Juris Doctor
Bond University
Deadline detail: Rolling — 8 weeks before intake start
Course Overview
Bond's Juris Doctor is the postgraduate route into law for people who already hold a bachelor's degree in something else — the equivalent of an LLB in professional standing, compressed. Bond runs three semesters a year rather than two, which is why the JD can be completed in two calendar years instead of the usual three; it is the fastest accredited pathway to legal qualification in Australia. The Faculty of Law is Bond's flagship: it has consistently topped Australian student-experience surveys for teaching quality, it runs one of the country's strongest mooting programmes, and class sizes are small enough that Socratic teaching actually works.
The curriculum covers the Priestley 11 — the eleven areas of knowledge every Australian admitting authority requires: criminal law, torts, contracts, property, equity, company law, administrative law, constitutional law, civil procedure, evidence and ethics — plus electives in international, commercial and dispute-resolution law. Bond's Legal Skills Centre, mooting programme and clinical legal education placements are built into the degree rather than offered as extras, and the campus houses the Australian Centre for Sports Law and the Centre for Commercial Law.
For Sri Lankan applicants the honest framing matters. A Bond JD qualifies you to seek admission to practise in Australia — after completing Practical Legal Training and satisfying the relevant Supreme Court admitting authority — and it is well regarded across the common-law world, including Singapore, Hong Kong, the UK and the Gulf. It does not by itself admit you to practise in Sri Lanka: admission as an Attorney-at-Law here runs through Sri Lanka Law College and the Supreme Court's own requirements, and a foreign law degree does not substitute for that. What the JD does do very effectively for a returnee is open the corporate, commercial and compliance side — the legal and company-secretarial functions of the listed conglomerates, the banks, the international law firms' Colombo work, the arbitration and cross-border commercial practice, and the legal teams inside multinationals operating in Sri Lanka.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A completed recognised bachelor's degree in any discipline — the JD is a graduate-entry programme and does not require a prior law degree.
- check_circle Sri Lankan applicants with a bachelor's from Colombo, Peradeniya, Kelaniya, Sri Jayewardenepura, Moratuwa or an accredited private-sector degree in any field are eligible; a second-class or better record is the realistic bar for a competitive file.
- check_circle Applicants who already hold an LLB may receive advanced standing for subjects already completed — Bond assesses this on the transcript, and it can shorten the degree.
- check_circle No LSAT is required.
- check_circle A personal statement and CV; relevant work experience in a law firm, court, regulator or corporate legal department strengthens the file.
- check_circle Bond's three-intake calendar means you can start in January, May or September, and applications are assessed on a rolling basis rather than against a single national deadline.
- check_circle An Australian student visa requires evidence of funds covering tuition, living costs and travel, plus Overseas Student Health Cover for the full visa period.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall with no band below 6.0 for most Bond programmes; law programmes commonly expect 7.0 Overall with no band below 6.5 — confirm the requirement for the JD with Bond admissions.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 92–100 Overall depending on the requirement applied.
- check_circle PTE Academic: 65 Overall.
- check_circle Waived where you have completed a full degree taught and assessed entirely in English at a recognised institution — most Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium bachelor's degrees satisfy this with a Medium of Instruction letter.
- check_circle Applicants from Cambridge or Edexcel International A-Level and IB backgrounds who then studied in English are typically covered by the same waiver.
- check_circle Note that the Department of Home Affairs assesses English for the student visa separately from Bond's academic requirement.

Career Outcomes & PR
Graduates are eligible for the 485 Temporary Graduate Visa, which gives two or more years of full work rights in Australia after a master's-level qualification. Admission to practise in Australia requires completing the JD, then Practical Legal Training (Bond runs its own PLT), and then applying to the admitting authority in the state where you intend to practise — the Legal Practitioners Admissions Board in Queensland, for example. Bond JD graduates go into commercial firms on the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sydney, into in-house counsel roles, into government legal and policy work, and into the growing dispute-resolution and arbitration practice in the Asia-Pacific. The two-year completion is a real financial advantage: you reach the job market a full year earlier than a three-year LLB cohort. For Sri Lankan returnees, remember that practising as an Attorney-at-Law in Sri Lanka runs through Sri Lanka Law College and the Supreme Court's admission process, not through a foreign degree — but the JD travels well into corporate legal and company-secretarial roles at John Keells, Hayleys, Aitken Spence, Dialog and the listed banks, into compliance and regulatory functions, into the Colombo offices of international firms and the arbitration bar, and into the legal departments of multinationals and BPO operations.
