LLM in International & European Law
University of Fribourg
Course Overview
The University of Fribourg's LLM in International and European Law is a specialist, English-taught master's from Switzerland's uniquely bilingual (French/German) law faculty — a setting well suited to comparative and cross-border legal study. The programme covers public international law, EU law and the internal market, international economic and trade law, human rights, and international dispute resolution, taught in small cohorts by faculty with strong links to Geneva's international-organisation ecosystem (UN, WTO, WIPO, ICRC). Fribourg is a respected mid-sized research university with centuries of legal-education heritage.
For Sri Lankan law graduates, Fribourg offers a globally credible LLM at symbolic Swiss public tuition (around CHF 795 per semester), English-medium delivery, and proximity to the world capital of international law and diplomacy in nearby Geneva. Graduates from Colombo, Open University, or UK-affiliated LLB programmes with an interest in international organisations, trade, human rights, or diplomacy are well matched. Note that the LLM is a specialist academic qualification — practising law in Sri Lanka still requires Bar admission.

Career Outcomes & PR
Switzerland lets non-EU graduates stay 6 months to seek qualified work. Fribourg international-law graduates route into international organisations and NGOs (many headquartered in Geneva), international law firms, trade and regulatory bodies, diplomacy, and academia. Sri Lankan returnees move into international and corporate legal advisory, compliance, development-sector legal roles, and policy work. Proximity to the UN, WTO, and WIPO makes internships and networking a standout asset of studying in French-speaking Switzerland.
