Course Overview
The Doctor of Design is Harvard GSD's research doctorate for people who already practise — it is deliberately positioned for architects, urban designers, landscape architects and planners with professional degrees and site experience who want to convert that into rigorous, publishable research. Areas include housing and urbanisation, climate adaptation and resilient design, computation and design technology, real estate and development economics, energy and environment, and design history and criticism.
Since the programme's restructuring, admitted DDes candidates receive a funding package covering tuition and a living stipend for the three years — Harvard GSD does not intend candidates to self-finance a research doctorate. That matters enormously for applicants from Sri Lanka, where the professional path into design research is otherwise blocked by cost. The three-year length also suits people leaving practice mid-career rather than the five-year commitment a US PhD normally implies.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A professional degree in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design or planning (typically a Master's), plus meaningful professional experience — this is not an entry-level doctorate.
- check_circle A well-developed research proposal with a clear question, methodological approach and connection to GSD faculty expertise.
- check_circle Portfolio of professional and research work, academic CV, and a writing sample.
- check_circle Three references, at least two academic.
- check_circle Admission is small and highly competitive; candidates typically apply with prior publication, teaching or research experience alongside practice.
English Proficiency
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 100 Overall, or IELTS Academic 7.5 Overall.
- check_circle Harvard GSD does not generally waive the English test on the basis of English-medium instruction — Sri Lankan applicants should plan to sit TOEFL or IELTS.
- check_circle The research proposal and writing sample are read as evidence of academic English competence in their own right.

Career Outcomes & PR
DDes graduates move into design-school faculty posts, research directorships inside large architecture and engineering practices, policy and research roles at city governments, development banks and foundations, and senior positions in climate-adaptation and housing programmes. The doctorate is explicitly positioned as a practice-to-research bridge, so many graduates return to practice at a research-leadership level rather than leaving it. The US grants 36 months of STEM OPT for designated STEM programmes and 12 months of standard OPT otherwise. Sri Lankan graduates are strong candidates for faculty leadership at Moratuwa's Faculty of Architecture, for the Urban Development Authority and Colombo's master-planning work, for climate-resilience and housing programmes run by the ADB, World Bank and UN-Habitat, and for research-led practice across South Asia.
