Course Overview
TU Graz's BSc Maschinenbau (Mechanical Engineering) sits next to AVL List — the world's largest independent automotive powertrain and testing company — and is the recognised feeder into Austria's automotive / aerospace / production-engineering corridor (Magna Steyr, BMW Steyr, AVL, KTM, Andritz, voestalpine). The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Economic Sciences has particular research strength in vehicle engineering, production technology, materials science, and energy systems. Graz itself — Austria's second-largest city — combines lower living costs than Vienna with one of the densest mechanical / automotive employer concentrations in continental Europe.
Sri Lankan applicants — typically Physical Science A-Level holders or strong UoM Mechanical / Production undergraduates restarting in Europe — choose TU Graz Mechanical for: €1,480/year non-EU tuition, the direct line into AVL and Magna Steyr internships, and a smooth ladder into the English-medium Master's at TU Graz or TU Wien. The 6-semester (180 ECTS) curriculum covers technical mechanics, machine elements, materials science, thermodynamics, manufacturing technology, control engineering, electrical engineering for mechanical engineers, and a Bachelor's project. Year 1 is German-medium with STEOP orientation. Returnees take design, manufacturing, and process engineering posts at MAS Holdings, Brandix, Hayleys Advantis, Diesel & Motor Engineering Sri Lanka, and the engineering subsidiaries of John Keells Holdings.

- check_circle Motivation letter and CV; Austrian document nostrification submitted at application time.
English Proficiency
- check_circle German B2 (Goethe-Zertifikat B2, ÖSD B2, or TestDaF TDN 4) required for the German-medium curriculum — alternative: TU Graz Vorstudienlehrgang preparatory year (€350/semester).

Red-White-Red Card for Graduates gives 12 months in Austria post-study, with conversion at a qualifying offer (~€2,925/month gross for graduates, 2025). Major Styrian employers: AVL List, Magna Steyr (Graz assembly plant — builds for BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, Toyota), KTM, Andritz, voestalpine Stahl Donawitz, Anton Paar (precision instruments), and the engineering divisions of Knapp AG and Voith. Median starting salary €38,000-€48,000 gross.
