BSc Mechanical Engineering
RWTH Aachen University
Course Overview
RWTH Aachen is Germany's #1 ranked university for Mechanical Engineering (Shanghai subject ranking) and the historical anchor of Germany's automotive R&D pipeline — the campus houses the Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika), the Werkzeugmaschinenlabor (WZL — Europe's largest machine-tool research lab) and 14 affiliated Fraunhofer institutes. The three-year BSc Maschinenbau is delivered primarily in German with English-medium electives in the second half. Core modules cover technical mechanics, thermodynamics, machine elements, materials science, control engineering, manufacturing technology and CAD/CAE, plus a bachelor's thesis in year three typically co-supervised with an industry partner.
Sri Lankan applicants from Combined Maths + Physics A-Level streams are ideally positioned. Most reach RWTH undergrad after a Studienkolleg year (T-Kurs — technical track) or a one-year German intensive (DSH-2 / TestDaF 4). NRW remains tuition-free for international students. RWTH Maschinenbau graduates are embedded in the automotive pipeline at Ford Cologne, BMW (regional R&D), Daimler Truck, Mercedes-Benz, Bosch and Continental — internships during the bachelor's are effectively expected.
