BSc International Relations and International Organization

The University of Groningen's BSc International Relations and International Organization (IRIO) is one of the Netherlands' most-established IR undergraduate programmes — Groningen is the oldest Dutch university outside the Randstad (founded 1614), top-150 globally (QS) and top-80 in Europe. The three-year programme is taught 100% in English and combines an unusually strong methods backbone (statistics, research design, quantitative methods) with the classic IR disciplinary mix: international relations theory, international law, international economics, international history, comparative politics, plus area-studies electives (European Studies, North American Studies, Asia Studies, Middle East and Africa Studies — Groningen offers South Asia content).

IRIO's distinguishing feature is its rigorous quantitative training relative to other European IR bachelors — graduates routinely progress into top European master's at LSE, Sciences Po, Oxford, plus US-style MPP / MPA programmes. Groningen is a student-dominant city in the north of the Netherlands (50,000+ students in a city of 230,000), which makes living costs the lowest among the major Dutch university cities. Direct internship pathways into Dutch ministries, European institutions in Brussels (1.5 hours by train from Groningen via Amsterdam), the UN system, and the major Dutch think tanks (Clingendael, HCSS). The tuition is also the most affordable among the major Dutch English-medium IR bachelors.
