BA Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics (PPLE)
University of Amsterdam
Course Overview
The University of Amsterdam's BA Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics (PPLE) is one of Europe's most distinctive interdisciplinary liberal-arts bachelors — modelled on the Oxford PPE tradition but extending the curriculum with Psychology and a strong methods backbone. PPLE is delivered through UvA's PPLE College in the historic centre of Amsterdam, with small-group tutorials in heritage canal-house teaching rooms. The three-year programme is taught 100% in English and operates a strict numerus fixus admission (~150 places per year) with a competitive selection process: motivation essay, academic CV, plus a structured admissions test covering quantitative reasoning, analytical writing and current affairs.
The curriculum is built around a core in all four disciplines (politics, psychology, law, economics) with a methods spine (statistics, research design, philosophy of science) and a substantive major chosen from Year 2 onwards. Year 3 includes an exchange semester at one of UvA's elite partner schools (Sciences Po, LSE, McGill, Singapore Management University) and a research thesis. Career outcomes route students into European policy, consulting, law school (Dutch civil-law tradition or US/UK common-law conversion), behavioural economics research, and the international NGO sector. The programme draws an unusually international cohort — typically 50+ nationalities with no single dominant majority.
