Course Overview

ZHAW's School of Management and Law runs the BSc in International Management as a standalone degree at the Winterthur campus, twenty minutes by train from Zurich, with all classroom instruction delivered in English. It is worth being precise about this, because ZHAW also runs a separate BSc in Business Administration that is taught in German — International Management is its own programme, not a major inside that one.

The degree runs six semesters full-time for 180 ECTS. The early semesters build the business core — financial and management accounting, economics, business law, marketing, statistics and quantitative methods, information systems — before the international layer takes over with international trade and finance, cross-cultural management, global supply chains, international marketing and strategy in multinational firms. One or two semesters abroad at a partner university are compulsory rather than optional, so graduates finish having studied in at least two countries.

On cost, ZHAW charges CHF 720 per semester in tuition plus a CHF 500 per-semester surcharge for students who were not resident in Switzerland when they started — about CHF 2,440 a year, close to LKR 903,000, and the surcharge continues for the whole degree even if you later move your residence to Switzerland. There are also one-off registration and enrolment fees of CHF 100 each. That is still a fraction of the £20,000-plus a year a comparable UK business degree costs, but the Swiss cost of living is the real constraint: Winterthur and Zurich are expensive, health insurance is compulsory, and non-EU students may work only 15 hours a week during term and only after the first six months of residence.

Admission is the step Sri Lankan applicants need to plan carefully. ZHAW is a university of applied sciences, so it looks for practical experience as well as academic qualifications: where the foreign school-leaving qualification is accepted as equivalent, applicants are additionally expected to have completed a year of full-time commercial work experience; where it is not accepted, an entrance examination covering finance and accounting, mathematics, German and English is required. Equivalency for Sri Lankan qualifications is decided case by case, so it should be confirmed with ZHAW before you build a plan around this route.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A recognised university-entrance qualification. Cambridge or Edexcel A-Levels and the IB Diploma are the qualifications most likely to be accepted as equivalent; Sri Lankan GCE A/L is assessed case by case and equivalency should be confirmed with ZHAW in writing before applying.
  • check_circle Where the qualification is accepted as equivalent, ZHAW additionally expects one year of full-time commercial work experience — this is a real requirement, not a preference, and school-leavers should plan for it.
  • check_circle Where the qualification is not accepted as equivalent, admission runs through ZHAW's entrance examination covering finance and accounting, mathematics, German and English, at a non-refundable fee of CHF 200.
  • check_circle No credit transfer into the programme is offered, so a completed diploma elsewhere will not shorten the six semesters.
  • check_circle Online application with certified, translated transcripts, passport copy, CV and a motivation letter.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle English at CEFR B2 is required and must be evidenced with a certificate.
  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 5.5 Overall.
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 83 Overall.
  • check_circle Cambridge English B2 First, C1 Advanced or BEC, Linguaskill at B2, or Duolingo English Test 115 are also accepted.
  • check_circle There is no medium-of-instruction waiver — ZHAW requires the certificate even from applicants who completed an entirely English-medium schooling, so Sri Lankan applicants should book the test rather than assume an exemption.
  • check_circle German is not required for this English-taught degree, but the entrance examination (where it applies) includes a German component, and basic German materially improves internship options in the Zurich region.

Career Outcomes & PR

Switzerland gives non-EU graduates six months to find work after graduating, converting to a work permit under cantonal quotas for qualifying skilled roles. ZHAW business graduates place into the finance, controlling, supply-chain and marketing functions of the multinationals headquartered in the region — ABB, Zurich Insurance, Swiss Re, UBS, Credit-sector employers, Nestlé, Novartis and Roche — plus the Big Four advisory practices in Zurich and the commodity-trading and logistics firms in Zug and Basel. Swiss graduate starting salaries in business roles typically run CHF 70,000-85,000. Sri Lankan returnees route into management-trainee, commercial and business-development positions at John Keells Holdings, Hayleys, Aitken Spence, MAS Holdings, Brandix, Dialog Axiata, Commercial Bank and the Colombo offices of the Big Four, and the international-trade content maps well onto Sri Lanka's apparel and logistics export sectors.
