Bachelor in Business Administration
University of St Gallen
Course Overview
The University of St Gallen (HSG) is Europe's leading business university — Financial Times ranks its Master's in Management #1 in the world year after year, and its Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA / Assessment Year route) is the feeder. Three years, taught primarily in German for year 1 (the 'Assessment Year') and shifting to bilingual German/English thereafter. The HSG network is unparalleled in Swiss and DACH-region business — McKinsey Zurich, Bain, BCG, UBS, Credit Suisse (now UBS), Roche, Novartis, Nestlé, Swiss Re, Zurich Insurance, and Holcim recruit aggressively from HSG.
Sri Lankan applicants face a real challenge: the Assessment Year is German-medium and HSG requires C1-level German for entry. The cleanest path for English-medium Sri Lankan students is to apply for HSG's MSc programmes after completing a Bachelor's elsewhere, OR to take 12–18 months of intensive German preparation before applying. Tuition is CHF 1,400 per semester — modest by Swiss standards. The HSG culture is intensely networking-driven and graduates outearn most European peers by year 5.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan A/Ls alone are NOT directly accepted — Cambridge A-Levels (A grades in three subjects including Mathematics), IB 38+, or the HSG entrance examination required.
- check_circle Strong mathematics, economics, or business background; demonstrated leadership (student council, debating, sports captaincy) is valued.
- check_circle Motivational essay, CV, full school transcripts.
- check_circle German proficiency at C1 level is mandatory for the Assessment Year — non-negotiable.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall (years 2+ have many English electives).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 100 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced or higher.
- check_circle Waived if prior schooling (Cambridge/Edexcel/IB) was English-medium — but German C1 is the binding requirement.

Career Outcomes & PR
HSG BBA graduates typically progress directly to HSG's MSc programmes (Master's in Management, Master's in Finance, Master's in Strategy) — that's where the FT #1 ranking pays out. For students who go directly to work, Switzerland's 6-month post-graduation permit and work-permit conversion under non-EU quotas applies. HSG alumni dominate Swiss management — McKinsey Zurich, BCG, Bain, UBS, Roche, Novartis, Nestlé, Swiss Re, Zurich Insurance, Holcim, Sika. Sri Lankan returnees with an HSG degree are exceptionally rare but route into senior strategy roles at John Keells, MAS, Dialog Axiata, HSBC SL, and the Big Four Colombo.
