Course Overview
Groningen's BSc Industrial Engineering and Management is a three-year, 180-ECTS degree taught entirely in English at the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Industrial engineering is the discipline of making production and supply systems work — not designing the machine, but designing the factory, the process, the logistics network and the decision rules that run them — and Groningen pairs it deliberately with management, so graduates can specify a process improvement and also make the business case for it.
The programme runs a genuine engineering core in mathematics, physics, mechanics, materials and process technology, alongside operations research, statistics, production planning, supply chain and logistics, quality management, and business economics. Students choose between two specialisation directions — Production Technology and Logistics, and Product and Process Technology — and the degree concludes with a bachelor's research project, usually with a company. Groningen also runs an honours track for strong students, and the faculty's links to the northern Netherlands' industrial base and to the Dutch logistics sector give the project work real industrial content.
For Sri Lankan applicants there is an obvious and direct argument here. Sri Lanka's economy runs on manufacturing and logistics: apparel is the largest industrial export and MAS, Brandix and Hirdaramani between them run operations that are studied internationally for lean manufacturing; the Port of Colombo is one of the busiest transhipment hubs in South Asia; and the tea, rubber, food and packaging sectors are all continuous-process industries. What those employers hire for is exactly this profile — industrial engineers who can run process improvement, capacity planning, quality systems and supply-chain optimisation. A Dutch engineering bachelor's in English, at a research university, with a twelve-month post-study orientation permit at the end, is a strong route into that career whether you stay in Europe or come home.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A secondary school qualification giving access to university, assessed against the Dutch VWO standard, with Mathematics and Physics as required subjects.
- check_circle Cambridge or Edexcel International A-Levels: Mathematics and Physics are effectively compulsory; Chemistry is a useful third. Competitive files sit at grade B or better in the science subjects.
- check_circle IB Diploma: Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches preferred) and Physics at Higher Level.
- check_circle Sri Lankan GCE A/L in the Physical Science stream with Combined Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry is the closest national equivalent, but A/L results alone frequently fall short of Dutch VWO equivalence for direct entry — have your specific results assessed by Groningen admissions before assuming you can enter directly. A foundation year or an additional qualification is often required.
- check_circle The mathematics requirement is strict and non-negotiable; the first year is heavily quantitative and the faculty does not admit applicants who cannot evidence it.
- check_circle Application through Studielink by 1 May for the September start, with transcripts, school certificates and a motivation statement. Apply earlier than the deadline — assessment is rolling and the residence-permit process needs lead time.
- check_circle Non-EU students need a residence permit, applied for by the university as a recognised sponsor, with proof of funds covering tuition plus the statutory living-cost amount.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall with no component below 6.0.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall with no section below 21.
- check_circle Cambridge English: C1 Advanced.
- check_circle Waived where your secondary education was taught and examined entirely in English at a recognised institution — Sri Lankan applicants from Cambridge and Edexcel International A-Level streams and IB schools generally qualify with a school letter confirming the medium of instruction.
- check_circle The entire degree — lectures, tutorials, laboratory work, assessment and the bachelor's project — runs in English. Dutch is not required.
- check_circle Free and low-cost Dutch classes run through the university language centre. For industrial engineering it is worth doing: much of the Dutch manufacturing and logistics sector, particularly outside the multinationals, operates in Dutch on the shop floor, and Dutch makes internships and graduate roles noticeably easier to find.

Career Outcomes & PR
Most graduates continue to a master's — Groningen's own MSc Industrial Engineering and Management is the natural continuation, and the bachelor's also gives access to master's programmes in supply chain, operations management and technology management across the Netherlands and Europe. The Netherlands grants non-EU graduates of Dutch universities a twelve-month orientation-year permit with unrestricted work rights, claimable within three years of graduating and convertible to a highly skilled migrant permit with a reduced salary threshold for recent graduates. Industrial engineers in the Netherlands work in manufacturing operations, supply chain and logistics — the country is Europe's logistics gateway, with Rotterdam, Schiphol and the distribution corridor behind them — process industries, consultancy, and the operations functions of technology and consumer companies. Employers include Philips, ASML, DSM, Unilever, FrieslandCampina, Heineken, AkzoNobel, the Dutch logistics operators and the operations practices at the consultancies. For Sri Lankan returnees the fit is direct and immediate: industrial engineering, lean manufacturing and supply-chain roles at MAS Holdings, Brandix, Hirdaramani, Hayleys, CBL, Cargills and the packaging and rubber-products manufacturers; port, freight and logistics operations around the Colombo transhipment hub; and process and quality engineering across the food, tea and plantation processing sector.
