Course Overview
University of Malta's BSc (Hons) Artificial Intelligence is run by the Department of AI within the Faculty of ICT — one of the few standalone undergraduate AI programmes in Europe (most universities still offer AI only as a specialisation inside CS). The Msida campus is a 15-minute drive from the iGaming / fintech belt where Betsson, Tipico, LeoVegas, and a growing AI-startup scene actively recruit. Malta is an English-speaking EU country, and all teaching is in English.
Sri Lankan A-Level applicants with strong Maths backgrounds (Physical Science / Combined Maths) treat this programme as a direct route into machine-learning careers without needing to first complete a generalist CS degree. The 3-year curriculum covers Python and Java programming, mathematical foundations (linear algebra, probability, statistics), machine learning, neural networks and deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, knowledge representation, AI ethics, and a Year 3 dissertation. Many students intern at Malta-based AI / iGaming analytics teams before graduation. Returnees route into ML engineering at WSO2, IFS R&D, Sysco LABS, and the growing AI consultancies in Colombo.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan Cambridge / Edexcel A-Levels: 2 A-Levels at grade C or above (Mathematics required at grade C minimum) plus 5 O-Level / GCSE passes including Mathematics and English.
- check_circle Sri Lankan GCE A/L: 3 passes in the Physical Science / Combined Mathematics stream.
- check_circle IB Diploma: 28-32 points including Mathematics at Higher Level.
- check_circle Mature applicants (21+) accepted under a separate route with relevant work experience.
- check_circle Motivation letter and CV. Interview may be required for borderline cases.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.0 Overall (no band below 5.5).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 80 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge English: B2 First grade C.
- check_circle MATSEC English or GCE O-Level English at grade C accepted.
- check_circle Waived if your school qualification was taught and assessed entirely in English (most Sri Lankan A-Level / IB applicants qualify with an MOI letter).

AI graduates qualify for Malta's 6-month post-study job-search residence permit, with conversion to a Single Permit (work + residence) at a qualifying offer. Malta's EU Blue Card threshold (~€26,000/yr in 2025) is among the lowest in the EU. Major employers: Betsson, Tipico, Kindred, LeoVegas (iGaming ML / risk analytics); HSBC Malta, Bank of Valletta (model-validation, fraud detection); growing AI startups in St Julian's and Sliema. Median starting AI / data graduate salary €25,000-€32,000. Sri Lankan returnees move into ML engineering, data science, and AI consulting at WSO2, IFS R&D, Virtusa, MillenniumIT, Sysco LABS, Dialog Axiata, and Big Four advisory teams in Colombo.
