Course Overview
Western's BSc Honours in Computer Science is a four-year programme housed in the Department of Computer Science within the Faculty of Science — students enter into a general first-year, then declare a CS module (Honours Specialisation, Major, or Specialisation) at the end of Year 1. Sri Lankan applicants applying out of A/Ls go directly into Year 1 and select CS in Year 2.
Core coursework covers data structures, algorithms, software engineering, operating systems, databases, machine learning, and theory of computation. Optional internship (Co-op / 12–16 month paid placement after Year 3) is a major draw — past students have placed at Shopify, RBC, Manulife, IBM Canada, and Royal Bank.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A/L Mathematics or Combined Mathematics stream — three A/L passes with at least two Bs and one C (or equivalent).
- check_circle Recommended A/L subjects: Combined Maths, Physics, and either Chemistry or ICT.
- check_circle Strong personal statement is helpful but not formally required for science programmes.
- check_circle No SAT required for international applicants from Sri Lankan A/L curricula.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (no band below 6.0).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 83 Overall (min 20 Writing, 20 Speaking).
- check_circle Waived if your A/Ls were completed in English medium.

Career Outcomes & PR
Western CS graduates are recruited by Shopify, RBC, TD, Manulife, IBM Canada, Microsoft Canada, and a growing London/Kitchener-Waterloo startup scene. Co-op placements often convert to full-time offers. The four-year Honours degree qualifies graduates for the 3-year PGWP, and CS roles consistently score well under Canada's Express Entry CRS for PR.
