University of Helsinki
Course Overview
University of Helsinki's BSc in Computer Science is delivered by the Department of Computer Science at the Kumpula Science Campus — central Helsinki, 10 minutes by tram from downtown. Founded in 1640, the University of Helsinki is Finland's oldest and largest research university, consistently ranked top-100 globally. Its CS department gave rise to Linus Torvalds (Linux), MySQL co-author Michael Widenius, and Tatu Ylönen (SSH). The 3-year programme covers programming, data structures and algorithms, computer architecture, databases, distributed systems, software engineering, machine learning, and a Bachelor's thesis. The first-year programming sequence is delivered through Helsinki's globally-popular open Massive Online Course (MOOC) materials.
Sri Lankan A-Level / IB applicants from Maths / Physics backgrounds (Combined Maths, Physical Science, ICT) choose Helsinki for its research depth and lower tuition than Aalto. Finland's 2-year post-study job-search residence permit (one of the longest in the EU) and the EU Blue Card pathway (~€3,827/month gross threshold in 2025) make permanent EU mobility realistic. Helsinki is home to Nokia, Supercell, Wolt, Rovio, Reaktor, Futurice, F-Secure, Microsoft Helsinki, plus the Nordic offices of Google and Meta — all active recruiters. Returnees route into software engineering at WSO2, IFS R&D, Virtusa, MillenniumIT, Sysco LABS, and Dialog Axiata.
