BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences
The University of Edinburgh
Course Overview
The University of Edinburgh's BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences is a flexible, Russell Group four-year honours degree. Edinburgh sits inside the global top 40 (and is consistently UK top-5 for biology) — the School of Biological Sciences is one of Europe's largest, with research strength in genetics, molecular biology, immunology, and ecology built on the legacy of Roslin (where Dolly the sheep was cloned).
You enter into a broad first two years covering biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, and physiology, then specialise from Year 3 into one of ~14 named honours routes — Molecular Biology, Genetics, Immunology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Ecology, Zoology, and more. The final year is a substantial research project working alongside a faculty lab, which is exactly the credential UK and global master's/PhD admissions committees look for.
For Sri Lankan A/L Bio-stream students this is a strong, employable science route into the UK: the Scottish four-year structure gives a softer first-year landing for international students, and the degree feeds directly into the UK's two-year post-study Graduate Route visa. Edinburgh's biotech and life-sciences cluster (BioQuarter, Roslin spin-outs) means lab and internship exposure during the degree, not just after it.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan A/Ls: three passes in the Bio stream, typically AAB–ABB, with Biology plus one of Chemistry, Physics, or Combined Maths at grade A or B.
- check_circle Cambridge International / Edexcel A-Levels: AAB including Biology and a second science (Chemistry preferred).
- check_circle IB Diploma: 37 points with 6,6,5 at Higher Level including Biology.
- check_circle A pass in O/L Mathematics and O/L English is expected.
- check_circle Edinburgh's International Foundation Programme is available for applicants who narrowly miss direct entry.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall with at least 6.0 in each component.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 92 Overall (with 23 in each section).
- check_circle Pearson PTE Academic: 62 Overall (minimum 59 in each).
- check_circle Cambridge English C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency: 176 Overall.
- check_circle Waiver path: applicants who completed Sri Lankan, Cambridge, or Edexcel A-Levels in the English medium (plus a credit in O/L English) usually satisfy Edinburgh's English requirement without a separate IELTS — submit a medium-of-instruction (MOI) letter from your school.

Career Outcomes & PR
Edinburgh biology graduates move into pharmaceutical and biotech R&D, clinical and genomics labs, the NHS, environmental and conservation bodies, scientific publishing, and data/bioinformatics roles. Many progress to funded master's and PhD study in the UK, EU, and North America. The UK Graduate Route visa lets you stay two years after graduation to work without employer sponsorship, and Edinburgh's BioQuarter cluster is a live recruiting ground for life-sciences employers.
