BFA in Fine Arts
Rhode Island School of Design
Course Overview
The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is consistently ranked the No. 1 art and design school in the United States and among the very best in the world. Its BFA in Fine Arts begins with the rigorous, legendary Foundation Studies year before students major in disciplines such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, or film/animation/video, supported by a strong liberal-arts curriculum delivered jointly with neighbouring Brown University. RISD's studio-intensive, critique-driven culture in Providence produces graduates who shape contemporary art, design, and visual culture worldwide.
Sri Lankan applicants with serious artistic talent — including students from the visual-arts streams and those building portfolios outside formal art schooling — choose RISD as the global summit for fine-arts training. Admission is portfolio-led, so a strong body of work matters more than grades alone. Graduates of this OPT-eligible degree qualify for 12 months of Optional Practical Training. RISD alumni exhibit and work internationally as practising artists, in galleries and museums, and across design, film, and creative industries. Returnees enrich Sri Lanka's contemporary-art and creative scene, teaching at art institutions, exhibiting through the Colombo galleries (Saskia Fernando, Barefoot), and working in design and the creative sector.
