BEng Engineering (Common Entry)
Trinity College Dublin
Course Overview
Trinity College Dublin's Engineering programme is delivered as a Common Entry BEng (formally BAI — Baccalaureatus in Arte Ingeniaria) that students enter without specifying a discipline. After two years of common engineering foundations (mathematics, mechanics, electrical engineering, thermodynamics, materials, design), students specialise in years 3-4 across 8 disciplines: Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering, Electronic & Computer Engineering, Civil, Structural & Environmental Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Energy Engineering, or Materials & Production Engineering. Trinity is Ireland's top engineering school and the only Irish university in the QS world top 100 (#87, 2024). The 4-year BEng (BAI) plus the optional 5th-year MAI (Master of Engineering) is the standard chartered engineering route — Engineers Ireland accredited.
Sri Lankan A-Level / IB applicants — Mathematics / Physical Science stream students from technically-strong schools (Royal, Ananda, S. Thomas', D.S. Senanayake, Trinity Kandy, Richmond Galle), plus international-school graduates — choose Trinity Engineering over UK Russell Group programmes for: Trinity's QS top-100 brand, tuition at €28,000/year (versus £30,000-£40,000 at Imperial / UCL / Cambridge engineering), Engineers Ireland accreditation that streams cleanly into IESL chartered engineer recognition, Ireland's 2-year post-study Third Level Graduate Programme, the Critical Skills Employment Permit (fast-track to PR within 2 years), and Dublin's engineering employer cluster (Pfizer Cork, AbbVie, Medtronic Galway, Intel Ireland, Stryker Cork). Returnees take chartered engineer track via the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) and route into senior engineering posts at Brown & Company, John Keells Engineering, MIT (Lanka), IFS Engineering, plus Big Four Colombo engineering and operations consulting practices.
Entry Requirements
Academic

- check_circle Sri Lankan GCE A/L: 3 passes in the Physical Science stream — Combined Mathematics and Physics required at A or B.
- check_circle IB Diploma: 32+ points with HL Mathematics (grade 6+) and HL Physics (grade 5+).
- check_circle Application via Trinity's CAO (Central Applications Office) portal for A-Level / IB applicants — Lanka Scholar handles document certification and CAO submission.
- check_circle Personal statement, CV, two academic references, transcripts. Mathematics or science olympiad participation strongly valued.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (no band below 6.0).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge English: C1 Advanced.
- check_circle PTE Academic: 63+.

Career Outcomes & PR
Trinity Engineering graduates report ~94% placement within 6 months, with starting salaries of €40,000-€55,000 in Ireland (higher in biomedical, pharmaceuticals, and tech-engineering crossover roles). Ireland's Third Level Graduate Programme gives up to 2 years post-study work permit; the Critical Skills Employment Permit (~€38,000 minimum salary — well below engineering graduate offers) opens a fast-track to Stamp 4 / permanent residence within 2 years. Top hirers in Ireland: Pfizer (Cork — pharmaceutical engineering), AbbVie, Medtronic (Galway — biomedical), Stryker (Cork), Intel Ireland (chip manufacturing), Boston Scientific (Galway), Johnson & Johnson, Eli Lilly (Cork), plus the engineering consultancies (Arup, Jacobs, ESB International), and the engineering-tech crossover roles at Google Dublin, Meta Dublin, Microsoft Ireland. Sri Lankan returnees route into chartered engineer (Sri Lanka) track via the IESL, then senior engineering posts at Brown & Company, John Keells Engineering, MIT (Lanka), IFS Engineering, Brandix Engineering Services, plus Big Four Colombo engineering and operations consulting practices.
