Course Overview
The University of British Columbia — ranked among the world's top 40 — runs one of Canada's most respected teacher-education programmes through its Faculty of Education. The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is a 12-month, post-degree professional programme: you already hold an undergraduate degree, and the BEd builds on it to qualify you as a secondary-school teacher in your subject area (such as English, mathematics, sciences, social studies, or languages).
The programme blends coursework in pedagogy, curriculum, assessment, and inclusive education with two substantial school practicum placements in British Columbia classrooms. Graduates are eligible to apply for a BC teaching certificate, and the qualification is widely recognised internationally — making it a credential you can use in Canada or carry into international and Sri Lankan schools.
For Sri Lankan graduates who want to teach, this is an efficient route: a single intensive year converts an existing degree into a professional teaching qualification at a globally ranked university. As an eligible UBC programme it can support a Post-Graduation Work Permit, and teaching is a recognised occupation in Canadian immigration pathways, giving graduates real study-to-work options in Vancouver and across BC.
Entry Requirements
Academic

- check_circle Relevant experience working with young people (tutoring, coaching, volunteering) strengthens the application.
- check_circle Academic transcripts, references, and a statement of intent.
- check_circle A criminal-record check is required before the school practicum, as is standard for teacher education.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall with no band below 6.5 (the higher standard reflects classroom teaching).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 100 Overall with at least 25 in reading, 22 in writing, 22 in listening, and 27 in speaking.
- check_circle Pearson PTE Academic is accepted within UBC's published range.
- check_circle Waiver path: UBC may waive the English test where you completed your degree, or several years of full-time study, in English — Sri Lankan English-medium graduates should ask us to confirm eligibility with documentation.

Career Outcomes & PR
