Course Overview
NHL Stenden's hospitality school in Leeuwarden runs on a real hotel: the four-star Stenden Hotel on campus is student-operated, so first-year modules on rooms division, food and beverage and revenue management are assessed against paying guests rather than case studies. The BBA is taught fully in English and built on Design Based Education — students work in multidisciplinary teams on live briefs from hotel groups, destination boards and event operators.
Two placements of roughly five months each are compulsory and paid, typically at €600-900 a month plus accommodation in many cases. For Sri Lankan students that changes the arithmetic significantly: the placement income offsets a meaningful share of living costs, and a Dutch hospitality bachelor with two documented international internships is a far stronger CV than a purely classroom degree. NHL Stenden also operates campuses in Qatar, South Africa, Thailand and Bali, and students can take a semester at one of them at no extra tuition.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan A-Levels with 3 passes (grades C or above), or the International Baccalaureate Diploma, or a recognised Foundation year.
- check_circle Applicants with only O-Levels plus a hospitality diploma (SLITHM, William Angliss) may be considered for a pathway or advanced entry after credit assessment.
- check_circle Motivation letter explaining your interest in the hospitality industry, plus a CV.
- check_circle An online intake interview or study-choice check is part of admission — NHL Stenden uses it to confirm fit, not to reject on academics alone.
- check_circle Mathematics at O-Level (credit pass) is expected for the revenue and finance modules.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.0 Overall (no band below 5.5).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 80 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge English C1 Advanced also accepted.
- check_circle Waived if you completed Sri Lankan A-Levels or the IB in the English medium — the standard waiver route for NHL Stenden applicants from Sri Lanka.

Career Outcomes & PR
Graduates enter management-trainee tracks with international hotel groups — Accor, Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Radisson and NH Hotel Group all recruit from Dutch hospitality schools — plus cruise lines, airline hospitality, event and venue operators, and destination management companies. The Netherlands offers the one-year Orientation Year (zoekjaar) residence permit after graduation, giving open access to the Dutch labour market to find a job. Sri Lankan graduates who return are strong candidates for supervisory and management roles at Cinnamon, Jetwing, Aitken Spence, John Keells Hotels, Shangri-La Colombo and the resort operators in Galle and the east coast, where an EU-trained hospitality bachelor with paid international placements is genuinely scarce.
